Loo in bathroom

We're remodelling upstairs (to gain an extra bedroom). The master bedroom will be extended with an ensuite (shower, loo, sink - loads of light and space and very pleasant). There will be a small family bathroom (with bath and integrated shower) and we have an existing upstairs loo, plus three bedrooms (for 3 DC).
It turns out that it will be more or less impossible to put a normal loo in the new location for family bathroom, so kids would have to use the separate loo (this is not next to the bathroom, but round corner). Rest of house has one more loo and shower room (with loo in it), so we will have four loos, but not one in the room with the bathtub. What do you think about that?

Do any of you live in houses without loo in bathroom? apparently quite common in the EU country we live in, but feels odd to me - seems only option would be a saniflo and I don't want that. DH thinks it's no problem to have a separate loo but I am quite sceptical. All views really welcome and helpful. Thanks!

I can't see the problem, potentially helpful in fact to avoid "I need to use the shower and he's taking ages on the loo" type issues...

As a child/teen our house had a loo in a tiny room with the next room having the sink and bath/shower. It was normal for us, eventually my parents got the house extended and they knocked that through and made it a big family bathroom instead when I was in my mid-teens. However the toilet was directly next to the sink/bath room, round a corner might be slightly more odd but tbh you probs just get used to it really?

so we will have four loos, but not one in the room with the bathtub. What do you think about that?

Errm not to be rude but you will have 4 loos for 5 people why on earth are you giving this headspace I cannot see how it's even crossed your mind that it would be a problem.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 31/05/2018 21:00

I would find that off-putting. It used to be very common in the UK up until the 1950s, but you now only find it in houses of that vintage that have not been modernised at all.

My main concern would be the resale issues though, so if it is common in the country you live in, I would worry less. Is there a sink in the existing upstairs loo? That would make it less off-putting to me.

sundaysurfer · 31/05/2018 21:02

Thanks - pretty unanimous so far. To be honest heads up everyone I've spoken to today in real life also thinks I'm a bit nuts to be so worried (including architect, DH and kids). Drip feed that I forgot in first post is that the separate loo doesn't have window (has ventilation though :-) and at moment none of us like it much.

I know we will have plenty of loosSmile- but I just can't shake the feeling that not having a loo in the bathroom is, well, wrong.

Cross post with Tawdry. Yes, there is a sink. I'm also a bit worried about resale.

It was how the house (late 1960s) was originally designed, but we changed it when we moved in and had fewer kids. Now, they really should have their own bedrooms. The younger two are sharing (8 year old girl and 5 year old boy) and they need separate space.

I wouldn't say it's common in houses here these days (especially not as big as ours), but there are always loads of loos ...

Our friends in the uk have a separate upstairs loo. It has no wash hand basin so you have to go into the bathroom to wash your hands. This is a no no in my view. If you have a basin in the loo, that’s fine.

Just for the record, I have 7 loos for 2 people!

EggysMom · 31/05/2018 21:14

We have one of those "vintage" houses where the toilet is in a separate room adjacent to the bathroom. What you lose on the annoyance factor that you have to enter another room to wash your hands, you gain on the ability to use the toilet whilst someone is having a long leisurely bath.

EggysMom · 31/05/2018 21:15

(But then, we only have the one loo.)
(We're poor.)

TheBlueDot · 31/05/2018 21:17

I recently moved into a house with loo seperate to the bathroom. I initially thought I’d knock through but have grown to really like it. The bathroom doesn’t get stinky. If someone’s using the shower, easy enough for someone else to use the loo (this has happened multiple times). A child faffing about brushing teeth etc doesn’t stop another child using the loo.

I’m a convert to seperate loos, so long as it has a sink. And if far prefer that to a saniflow type loo in a main bathroom.

Can you think of ways to make the loo nicer - new fittings, better ventilation, decoration?

I see no problem with having a seperate loo

soupmaker · 31/05/2018 21:18

We are a household of 4 with one bathroom. I'm finding it hard to see what the problem is OP.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/06/2018 09:01

I grew up in houses with one bathroom and a separate loo. And there were 6 of us. It was normal then, and sensible IMO, in the days when baths, which take longer than showers, were the norm.
My GPs' houses were the same, ditto my ILs'.
I well remember my FiL saying 'They are separate functions!' and I suppose he had a point there!

None of the loos had washbasins though - nobody would think of doing that now.

Seeline · 01/06/2018 09:06

We actually moved our look out of the bathroom. At the time we only had the one, and it meant you couldn't use it if someone was having a bath. Since we've had another put in downstairs and have 2 teens who spend hours in both the lord and the bathroom. It's definitely good to have them all separate - I wouldn't want one in the bathroom now.

Seeline · 01/06/2018 09:07
  • lord = loo
Heroo · 01/06/2018 10:19

As long as there is a sink in the loo, no problem.

sundaysurfer · 02/06/2018 12:11

Thanks everyone. I also spoke to a few more people in real life. It seems that pretty much everyone on this thread and in real life thinks it's a non-problem, and quite a few people actively prefer it that way. So am going to stop stressing and start planning new bathroom without loo Smile
