Shoe storage ideas for large dh shoes

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 28/05/2018 22:43

Dh has size 12 feet which means shoes are 32cm long. So many shoe storage solutions are only 30cm in depth. Does anyone have any ideas as to what works?
My hallway is a complete mess and I need something to put his shoes in so we don't keep tripping up on them.

Following with interest, my dh is a size 11 and the ones in ikea are a bit too small!

What sort of space do you have in your hallway? Do you already have any furniture, or a built in cupboard? The previous owners of our house had shoe shelves built in to the built in cupboard and this is great for us.

Failing that, I'd suggest some sort of console table with shelves underneath. Even if the shelves aren't quite deep enough for his shoes, a couple of large wicker baskets could go on the and the shoes go in sideways. Personally I'm not a fan of lots of shoes on display, so I'd hide them away this way anyway!

One example from a quick google: www.marksandspencer.com/padstow-console-table-grey/p/p60144979?extid=ps_gglpla_Furniture_1062307620_57565812172&s_kwcid=AL!2750!3!251703834865!!!g!297710415341!EFKW&device=m&cvosrc=ppc%20shopping.google.Furniture%20%3E%20Living%20Room%20%3E%20Console%20Tables&cvo_pid=57565812172&s_kwcid=AL!2750!3!251703834865!!!g!!EFKW&gclid=CIDt3um6qtsCFZWFhQodcdwOWA&gclsrc=ds&pdpredirect

I had the opposite problem - small hallway and I couldn't find anything small enough! I'm really surprised you can't find anything over 30, everything I found was too big.

Cotswold Co mostly seem to be 38-40cm.

have a look at kitchen units.

I use a floor standing "wine rack" unit, it's 300mm wide, so a pair fits on each level, and about 450mm deep, so plenty. It doesn't have a door but I expect an ordinary kitchen door would fit. They are available in heights between about 880mm and 2000mm (including legs).

A lot of kitchen units are white with large self-assembly joints and don't look good. Mine happens to be dark walnut to match some other items and doesn't look too bad. If you are prosperous you can have units made to your specification for colour, size, and shelving content. It could easily cost a couple of £hundred though.

If it was out of sight a white one would do. Apart from wine racks, kitchen units only come with about one shelf, but you can buy additional shelf packs. They are cheapest on fleabay. Wall units are normally only 300mm deep, so not what you want. 350mm and deeper are scarce.

Very rarely you will see a used or clearance unit that happens to be exactly what you want.

We have the kallax units - 4 high 2 wide, 1 bottom empty for dhs size 14s and other with half height basket for dd's shoes. Each person then gets a cubby and basket for hats, bags, scarf, dog walking jacket etc.

But we have space under the stairs so fits perfectly.

We haveikea Kallax units for all our shoes

Thanks. The M&S console looks lovely but I really want things hidden.
Will have a think about Kallax units.

Not the cheapest option, nor the prettiest, but I have a stack of these inside a hall cupboard. The drop down front makes them incredibly useful.

I have the smaller size, but this size looks big enough for you

My dh has enormous feet (13) and loves bulky trainers. We have the ikea hemmed shoe cabinet (with two big compartments and a small drawer) and his shoes fit in fine. We left the divider out of the bottom drawer for his trainers and work shoes but vans fit fine in the one with dividers. Happy to dm you a pic if you like. (Can you dm pics?!).

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 02/06/2018 23:59

Colonel yes pls dm me some pics if poss!
And can you kindly link here the storage thing you have.

Have a look at the Futon Company

Loobyloomicles · 03/06/2018 00:20

I've got an IKEA Billy (with doors). Bought extra shelves and we then stacked our shoes in sideways.

user1486076969 · 03/06/2018 09:00

We use a Billy (Ikea) bookcase.

KatyNana · 03/06/2018 11:27

I like the Daxton ones from Habitat. Fit size 10 in no problem.

ColonelCakes · 03/06/2018 13:40

Here’s the shoe cabinet, will send pics once at home www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/small-storage-organisers/shoe-cabinets/hemnes-shoe-cabinet-with-2-compartments-white-art-20169559/

I like those tilting shelf/drawer things. Very clever way to hold shoes.

I saw something of the same style in a local furniture-makers workshop a long time ago, but sadly they no longer make them.
