Any one have a Pergola?? Not sure if that's the right name

I would very much like a wooden "thingie" over my decking area. Have googled it and think it is called a pergola. (only reason I am querying what it's called as someone the other day called a gazebo wellIcallitagazebo a pergola!

How much roughly does it cost? I will have to get someone in to do it, just don't want to waste anyones time if it will cost thousands!

The three biggest differences between gazebos and pergolas are in their visual structures. Gazebos are typically round or octagonal, while pergolas are square or rectangular. Gazebos have a roof, while pergolas have cross beams, but no roof. ... If it is to accent a deck or patio, then a pergola would be the way to go.

Then I am correct thinking that the gazebo was in fact a gazebo as it is octagonal and has a roof!

So it is a pergola that I am after!

We built one yesterday. Took 2 of us about 3 hours. Bought the wood locally and it cost about £200. You do need some decent power tools though.

I've just been down a rabbit hole with this thread, yes assuming you aren't wanting a closed roof ;)

MessySurfaces · 27/05/2018 11:44

I'd expect a gazebo to be free standing with an opaque roof (be it metal, canvas, or something else), and a pergola to have legs on one side and lean on a wall, with an open grid structure roof (made of wood or metal, probably) with plants growing over it, or possibly rush matting, for shade,

the open beam ones don't perform much useful function, as they don't keep the rain off, and your climbing plants allow spiders and caterpillars to jump off onto your head and into your tea.

MessySurfaces · 27/05/2018 12:17

Ah piglet but you forget the very useful function of pretending we live in a lovely Mediterranean country where it keeps the sun off our long relaxed lunches!

owthathurts · 27/05/2018 21:01

Piglet thanks for the warning, I will make sure I cover me tea! Grin

On a more serious note - I want to put it on the back of my house (kitchen and conservatory) do you think it would block light?

Pergolas are used for shade and normally covered with trailing roses or wisteria so they’re essentially designed to provide a shade and block out light Confused

We have a triangular wooden one in one corner of our garden. We grow honeysuckle and a golden hop over it and and have a little cast iron table and a couple of chairs under. It's a lovely shady, private little place. Never had any caterpillars in our tea.

Ours was knocked up by the guy who did our patio.
