Peterborough is direct to Kings Cross in 50 mins. It’s an uninspiring place but has many gorgeous villages around like Barnack, Pilton, Fotheringhay, etc.

SoyDora · 26/05/2018 20:44

I live in a village in the East Midlands, 1.5 hours from kings cross, and you would get a 5 bed detached for that round here.
The cost of getting to kings cross is extremely high though, approx £180 anytime return.

SoyDora · 26/05/2018 20:45

Villages around Northamptonshire or somewhere like market harborough would be worth a look.

PotteringAlong · 26/05/2018 20:45

Doncaster. The fast train is 1hr 20 mins...

GreyGardens88 · 26/05/2018 20:48

Surely a good chunk of the country is an hour and a half from Kings Cross, I'm not exactly sure why that's relevant? Leeds is only an hour 50 on the fast train

Japanesejazz · 26/05/2018 20:52

A season ticket is cheaper

Warwickshire is gorgeous and can be at Euston in 50 mins

PianoThirty · 26/05/2018 21:07

Grantham. 1h10m to Kings Cross. There are a handful of 5-bed detached houses within budget.

A season ticket to Kings Cross will set you back £845 a month; or £914 if you need the tube too. That would go a long way towards a mortgage closer to London.

How detached do you want? Some houses are notionally detached but barely an alleyway’s width away from the neighbours, and with small gardens to boot.

Angryosaurus · 26/05/2018 21:51

I doubt northants or market harborough/Leicestershire have anything in budget

Angryosaurus · 26/05/2018 21:53

Sorry just seen you live in East Midlands soy. I’m intrigued to know where you would get a ( bed detached now!

SoyDora · 26/05/2018 21:53

I’m in Leicestershire and am in a similar property to the one required which we paid less for in September. Just done a quick search within 5 miles of me and found some suitable, in budget properties.

Japanesejazz · 26/05/2018 21:57

Ah but the best town in England

OP posts:
FunkyHeroCat · 27/05/2018 17:41

You can get houses like that around Hastings, but 3 hours+ round trip a day (plus cost of travel) is more than enough to put us off!

dejectedharry · 27/05/2018 22:13

Downham Market, Littleport, Ely

Ely might be a bit expensive but if you can live in the villages surrounding it then you can get decent houses for a lot cheaper than in Ely.

WhatMakesYouHappy · 27/05/2018 22:48

Grantham. Just over an hour on the train, some nice houses despite the town being average. Season ticket won't bankrupt you!

Pboroadnauseum · 27/05/2018 22:52

Grantham is bloody awful and the people in Peterborough are strange. There’s a reason these houses are so cheap.

RomaineCalm · 27/05/2018 22:56

Sorry for daft question but do you mean 'door to door' in 1.5 hours or just a 1.5 hour train journey. Unless you live next to the station you could be adding another 30-60 minutes to drive, park, get to the platform etc.

WhatMakesYouHappy · 28/05/2018 00:08

Grantham is bloody awful

Bit harsh. Certainly not amazing, but depends if OP needs to move and what they want from it...

What about this one?

East Midlands Parkway Station is your man, hour and a half to St Pancras and loads of nice houses within a few miles

NotARegularPenguin · 29/05/2018 23:11

Bingham is quite a way from Grantham.

closer

NotARegularPenguin · 29/05/2018 23:12

Sorry, that’s only 4.

SavoyCabbage · 29/05/2018 23:12

Bingham is nice.
