Potentially another daft question from me...

If your hob is on the island, with an extractor fan above, and your cookers are elsewhere ( we're planning on ours being opposite ) does the extractor work when say you are cooking a roast in the oven?
I've been thinking about when I used to use the extractor, and it was generally when I was doing a roast and for when I would open the door to baste the chicken and it would whoosh out all the chicken smells. If the extractor is say 1m away and obviously up high in the ceiling, will it still work to suck out the oven steam and smells?
As I said - could well be a silly question!!

hobs generally make more smells and fat fumes than ovens, so the extractor above them is usual.

Plain hot air from an oven will tend to rise so a ceiling extractor will tend to catch some of it (unless it is a canopy lower than the ceiling.

BTW does anybody here have a gas oven? It seems to me that they smell less, I surmise the flame burns away the vaporised fat splatter.

And they make a better skin on a rice pudding.

bobkate · 21/05/2018 22:17

Thanks pigletjohn - so it should suck up some of the steam from the oven then.
No gas oven for me - I like electric. Plus I'm not a fan of rice pudding Grin

cook one and post me the skin.

bobkate · 21/05/2018 23:46

When I get a new oven I will attempt a rice pudding...just for you. I reckon my DDs would probably like it as well. You'll just have to wait a few months though Grin

Ooh, rice pudding (sorry).

mommybear1 · 22/05/2018 09:09

Already answered I note but we have this set up and yes the extractor does pick up some of the oven smells but not a lot. We have Velux windows and have found if we keep the one nearest the ovens open the steam etc seems to pull straight up to it so it helps lessen the smell.

@PigletJohn rice pudding skin - No, just no.

Can I please beg some advice from you? My boiler needs repressurising and I've forgotten which knobs to turn which way! I also think the service guy tightened a key too tight for me to move...

Gold Combi HE boiler
In the photo, the wood is the wall.
In the photo, is the silver pipe on the left the cold water pipe? I can turn this knob 90 degrees to the to the right. (#1 pipe)
There is nothing to turn on the next 2 pipes (#2 and #3 pipe)
Numbers #4 and #5 pipes have 2 knobs on each one. I have a feeling that #4 pipe is the one that I need, and that it should be the knob at the front, not the back? It's difficult to see this in the photo, but it's the one 'higher' up.. But I can't move it... Or is one #5 pipe?

Advice much appreciated.

OP - sorry for hijack

Hi PJ yes, I believe so, though link doesn't work (server error in runtime application). It's definitely a Potterton Gold Combi HE.

OP, PigletJohn is the man. He is renowned across the WHOLE of MN. And that is not a joke or an exaggeration.

bobkate · 22/05/2018 23:06

Twitter believe me I know that!!! I nearly fell off my chair when I saw his name on my ridiculous question thread! I feel strangely honoured Grin although now I feel I need to ask a far more sensible question!

renowned across the WHOLE of MN

To be fair, it's mostly for my ground-breaking work in Style and Beauty.

TwitterQueen1 · 24/05/2018 15:31

Do you have any advice for me PigletJohn ?

HelenTheHunter · 24/05/2018 20:47

PigletJohn I don't wish to take your service away from MN and I might be about to make myself very unpopular but I often see you called on in posts and am amazed nobody has set up an online advice service for this sort of thing... unless they already have...
If they haven't I think you could set one up and start charging everyone a fiver per question Grin

PigletJohn · 25/05/2018 00:00

queen

does this link work for you?

acwilgar.co.uk/Boiler-Manual-PDF/Potterton/Potterton%20Gold%20C24~C28~C33%20HE%20Installation%20Guide.pdf

if not, try
www.google.com/search?q=Potterton+Gold+Combi+HE&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

the diagram doesn't look to me quite the same as your pic.

Toseland · 25/05/2018 00:32

Hi, I have that boiler, it’s the two on the right hand side. I have two knobs right at the front. Turn the left of the two until it’s fully open then turn the right one a little, letting water in until your dial is on green. X

TwitterQueen1 · 27/05/2018 22:21

Thanks Toseland. No joy unfortunately. I guess it's the plumber for me..

PigletJohn · 27/05/2018 22:40

film it on your phone and upload it to the cloud or your PC to remind you next time.

Also, when you can trace the correct instruction book, file a copy and print off the pages you need.

The makers will probably have one on their website, or if you contact their help desk. They will need model and year.
