Long stave/super stave oak worktop for island

Hello,

After a lot of research, we've decided to replace our island worktop with solid wood. I found what I thought was a lovely looking worksurface which has 90mm staves running the full length of the island.

However, when I chatted with the supplier of our other (laminate) worktop - who is a fitter of 30 years - he was very surprised that anyone would make a worktop which a) such wide staves and b) such long staves. He thought it'd warp or be weak and not as resilient at narrower, shorter staves.

Anyone had any experience of this?

What about wide block instead? Planks of the oak joined together as a table top would be instead of the butcher's block narrower pieces put together?

Thanks @Wowfudge. These are very wide 90mm vs 40mm. I don't know if both combinations means it might be a bit less... stable?

soooo.......
your laminate supplier (selling laminate) has told you that wood at that length and width warps??
good luck to 90% of the roofs in this country

@diseno Grin

The supplier also sells solid wood worktops, actually. I'd seen the full length stave, 90mm width ones online at what seemed like a reasonable price, and thought I'd ask the company I was buying the laminate and radiators from if they could do similar (maybe price match or something for ease), but he was so confused about it!

But then I found lots of companies doing a similar thing, but wouldn't want to then end up with warping/cracking or the like....

the chances of it warping would be just like any other worktop.
these types of wood are used for many things in the construction trade.
Loads offer the full stave, granted its more than normal butcher block worktops but very nice

Thanks @Diseno!
