Road noise- rural home

If you were looking to buy a gorgeous rural cottage with amazing views of nothing but fields , a large landscapes garden, situated on a quiet country lane BUT within earshot of a fairly busy A road (but you can't see it).

Would it put you off?

Looking at buying a place but DH thinks it will put people off when we come to sell in 10 years time.

We live in a house like this. It’s just a him in the garden and slightly noisy when you open front windows. I do however use that road daily to get to work and it’s great being close to it for that! Only noise that really got on my nerves was resurfacing work at night and the beeping of the lorries as they reversed.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/05/2018 15:46

Unless you experience a sudden increase in traffic then it tends to become your own version of white noise.

We live about half a mile as the crow flies from the local bypass. Usually the constant hum of traffic doesn't bother me, even at night with the windows open. However last night they were resurfacing the tarmac and the machines did keep me awake.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/05/2018 15:48

I've also lived with aircraft noise (lived very close to Filton, where Concorde was built ) and the Bristol Hum.

It’s not going to take 50 years to go electric. I was the only person on my road to have an electric car one year ago, now there’s five. I wouldn’t consider buying a non electric car now, it’s miles cheaper to run than petrol.

MarshaBradyo · 22/05/2018 15:54

It’s weird at one point I looked at the country
It was louder than zone 2 London

Kingsclerelass · 22/05/2018 16:06

No it wouldn’t put me off.

My house is as you describe, backs onto fields and road noise isn’t a problem. (The A road is a mile to the east)

At night all I hear are owls hooting, deer barking, foxes screaming and the local chinook squadron practising night flying. And assorted cockerals from 4am.

Whatever else, the country isn’t quiet. It’s different Smile

MeMeMeow85 · 22/05/2018 16:54

Unless it’s your forever home, I’d be concerned about potential resale. Just limits the number of people who may buy as most heading to the countryside are looking for a rural idyll. Good luck with your offer!

We can hear the background noise of a motorway most days if we really think about but we don't notice it most of the time. It's the birds and the sheep that we hear most of the time.

It's fine and we've never regretted moving here......Smile

Happyman2019 · 01/04/2019 22:24

Let's not forget electric vehicles could soon reduce noise as will new quiet tarmac. I think now could be the time to buy that house blighted by noise as it may get better.

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2019 08:01

We need more electric cars to go further than 100 miles beteern charges before more people get them. Over the last year sales have stalled. Who has time to charge them on long journeys? Much better infrastructure needed and how do you charge them in a terraced house without draping a lead across the street? Lots of problems to be addressed!

However, is this village desirable? Have house prices remained high in comparison to nearest town? If it’s still sought after, then making an offer sounds sensible because the Road affects the whole village I assume not just this house?

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2019 08:03

This country doesn’t have the money to replace all motorway surfaces with quiet tarmac! Don’t hold your breath on that one!

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2019 08:07

It's odd how noise travels. I live approx a mile from our village "centre" which is a Post Office and a pub, there is a road running through it, not busy by any means. When it's winter and no leaves on the trees I can hear the traffic, motor bikes or a noisey lorry.

I'm not sure it would bother me, unless it was noisey enough to interuppt conversation.

SwoopTheJackpot · 02/04/2019 08:12

Triple glazed windows would fix this.

Spicylolly · 02/04/2019 09:45

We always completely ruled out houses in an A road but we fell in love with one and we don't even notice the road now. I'd say to for it 👍

Penguinpandarabbit · 02/04/2019 09:49

This is from 2018 so hopefully the OP is now happily in her new home.

youaremyrain · 02/04/2019 17:05

A lot of traffic noise is from the tyres, not just the engines.

If OPs house is still on the market now (one year later) then we can assume it's hard to sell

needsleepzzz · 02/04/2019 17:12

Not a cottage but it's what we did :-) there is a field between us and the main road, only notice noise at rush hour (A road) but you get used to it, barely notice it now bar the odd lorry. An extra plus is we have bus stops on the A road with frequent buses in both direction so great transport links.
During the day/night there's little noise

stucknoue · 02/04/2019 17:25

I could hear the m11 3 miles away but never bothered me

Squirreltamer · 02/04/2019 20:51

Whilst I agree electric cars will make a massive difference noise wise in a city or close to road setting on 30mph roads.
A few neighbours have electric cars and you can hardly hear them!

For distance whoosh of motorway in a country setting. Not much difference, this sound is aerodynamics/tire related and on fast roads the sound will still travel.

But this type of sound is hardly noticeable with birds chirping and cows mooing etc and would become white noise in a week or 2 especially if it’s in the distance.

But I think the iPhone culture of upgrading electric cars as the technology rapidly improves won’t help the environment as a whole much! But will improve things more locally. Hopefully they crack recycling batteries in a enviromently friendly way quickly!

Anyways nice bump of this old thread.
