Washing machine and boiler

I feel like this is a ridiculous question, but here goes.

My boiler is broken, not heating, no hot water --even though the engineer said my heating would be fiiiiine

Can I still use my washing machine. I’m not sure where all the wiring is going.

Worst case scenario, will my clothes just be washed cold? I don’t want to make the issue with the boiler any worse.

Boilers about 4 years old, washing machine 3 years.

I think most washing machines only take in cold water and then heat it to wash clothes so you should be fine

It’s the “should be” part which worries me Grin

It will have a cold water hose connected to the cold water. It is not connected to your boiler. They have heating elements to heat the water

At the back of the washing machine there will be a hose going into the machine. Most modern machines are cold fill only and there will be one hose , if it has 2 hoses going in , it's hot and cold fill. I can't remember the last time I had a hot and cold fill machine. The water temp will be heated correctly by the machine according to the programme you use. ( which is why you can do colder washes if you want by setting the temperature )

There are two hoses, one with a blue end on it. I take the other one is to pump out then?

It'd only be a very old washing machine that would need hot & cold water. All washing machines these days take just cold water and heat the water inside the machine.

Just try it - it should work fine without the boiler.

If you want to know for sure then slide it out from the wall and check - if there are two pipes at the back then you're fine (cold in, waste out). If there are more then it may need hot water.

Yes it will be fine. If it has one blue hose and an output only. No red hose. We had a broken boiler and used the washing machine just fine recently (like you I also wondered too and googled it lol!)
