Hoping MN can find a solution - cleaning my fire surround (boring alert)

Up close my fire surround is looking a bit scruffy.

The previous owner clearly thought it would be a good idea to wash wipe it over and now I have specks of rust on the polished finish.

I have searched online for cleaning tips, but can't find any that I feel confident to try on such a large area.

Does anyone have a similar surround and if you do could you give me advice on how do you clean & repolish it?

I think you will need to sand off the rust, polish it and then coat it with something to stop the air and moisture getting to it. Maybe a wax of some sort? Or you could sand it and then use fireplace blacking

Try barkeepers friend. I have a brass surround and it brings it up gleaming every time.

Mine are the black cast iron jobbies, but I would use something like the bar keepers friend mentioned up thread, which should get the rust off and follow with clear polish to repel any water in the future.

Thank you for the advice.

Although I agree the rust may need sanding I am loathe to start that and make more of a mess. So I am going to have a go with bar keepers friend on a test patch.and see what happens.

A regular spray with WD40 and a buff up with a soft cloth might do the trick.

I've had a similar problem with our fireplace after it was covered up whilst building work done. I've found using a scrubbing sponge with whichever cleaner you use works better. It does need some elbow grease.
