What kitchen flooring type did you choose? Any regrets?

I like idea of tiles but read some stain easily.

Those who have chosen tiles, vinyl, laminate or anything else i missed out on....any regrets or thoughts?

My kitchen extension is circa 42m2 and anything over £15m2 is alot of cash, so looking for something pretty cheap but long lasting.

Karndean wood effect is what we went for.
No regrets in terms of cleaning, maintenance (zero) and love that it's not as hard as tiles for toddler falling over and crockery breaking. I think it will stay looking like the day it was installed for a very long time.
Slight regret on the shade (little bit dark) and the fact it was so expensive means I don't feel we can change it ever!
Here's a pic

Oh looks like photo didn't post?

PlumsGalore · 11/05/2018 18:43

Tiles but I wouldn't have them again. I have Karndean in the hall and bathrooms and would have that next.

chandlersfraud · 11/05/2018 18:44

Had ceramic tiles before with beigey grout and the dirty grout drove me mad

HostaToFortune · 11/05/2018 18:46

Ours is about 10m long and 4m wide. We had vinyl. 7 years on it has rucked and wrinkled, especially in the high traffic areas under the dining table. It’s been marked by things falling on it. And because we have part floorboards, part concrete underneath, the fitters laid plywood boards underneath which creak horribly. We’re now planning an extension for a utility room and will replace with Amtico or similar.

Engineered oak, looks lovely, warm to walk on but every time my kids drop something on it it's another dent in my floor.

I have a few scratches too one in the hall caused by a wee stone stuck in a heavy cardboard box that i got delivery and slid across the floor.Shock Don't think I'd opt for it again with very young children.

LurkingQuietly · 11/05/2018 19:30

@MismatchedPJs we've got Amtico Spacia in ceramic sable.

skippy67 · 11/05/2018 19:31

We have Marmoleum. Easy to clean, and looks great after 10+ years. We're redoing the kitchen next year, and I'll be going with Marmoleum again.

MismatchedPJs · 11/05/2018 19:36

@LurkingQuietly thank you.

weekfour · 11/05/2018 20:32

I’ve been eyeing them up @GrumpySausage . You may have just convinced me to convince DH that it was his idea.

MadgeMak · 11/05/2018 20:58

Vinyl. We went for a very cheap vinyl purposely because we were unsure whether we would like the look, so it has damaged very easily with lots of dents where things have been dropped. So we will replace it when it's totally wrecked with a more durable and expensive version now we know we like how it looks.

minipie · 11/05/2018 21:08

Great thread! I am weighing up wood effect tiles vs wood effect karndean (or similar).

Anyone with tiles managed to solve the grubby grout issue? Our kitchen grout gets so dirty...

ISeeTheLight · 11/05/2018 21:14

Vinyl cushion floor here. It's relatively cheap, practical, and looks nice. We'll, we like the design, we've found people hate it or love it.

We have grey grout (smoke), problem solved!

minipie · 11/05/2018 21:18

Thanks June! Is that with a grey floor or are you happy for grout lines to stand out?

MismatchedPJs · 11/05/2018 21:24

Our bathroom fitter just asked if we wanted light grey or dark grey grout for our floors! I think grey grout's mainstream for floors.

I was really surprised how realistic wood effect tiles are. They shouldn't work but somehow they do.

JuneBalloon · 11/05/2018 21:33

@minipie They are a mixed swirly grey and tan tile - sound hideous but we really like them - it's a big kitchen diner and follows through into the hall so doesn't look too busy.

When we did the kitchen floor in our old house we chose a multi-toned textured tile. Never again!! After a while I was always scrubbing at marks only to realise they were actually part of the design & when there was dirt I had to get down on my hands and knees and scrub it out of the grooves!!
When we do the kitchen floor in this house it will be light coloured, simple Amtico!

Midthreademergencynamechange · 11/05/2018 21:51

Engineered wood. No regrets at all, I still love it after 7 years.

minipie · 12/05/2018 17:02

Ah thanks June - I was hoping for a fairly light floor as the back half of the room may be quite dark, but then grey grout would show... hmmm...

We did lots of research and got samples. In the end we found a great deal on a discontinued amtico design by amtico for £18 sq m. We bought it online from a company called www.floorbay.co.uk who even arranged a fitter too.
