Oil for oak worktop recommendation please

Hi I have oak worktops and the oil that came from the supplier was rubbish. Worktop marked really easily with metal products (not pans) that turned the wood black in areas. I.e bottom of the biscuit tin.

Tin cans of wash out and put on the top to drain would make black rings.

I stripped it all back and sanded and got some ronseal worktop oil. Followed instructions to the tea.

It's been ok but I've washed the metal round pizza trays and stupidly put them on the drainer and there's a big black ring!!

Pls can someone recommend a product /oil that would stop this from happening or is this just how it is with wooden worktops?

Thanks in advance

I got some Osmo oil from Amazon after it was recommended on here and it's very good.

Definitely osmo matt clear. It is the best by far!

Tung Oil is the answer.

Osmo!

I used Danish/Linseed oil on mine, I never got problems with water damage but I was a bit anal about water being left standing!

MrBennOfFestiveRoad · 06/05/2018 21:36

Osmo!

Osmo oil. But my sister has oak and found out that metal, particularly cast iron, will leave black marks. You will either have to change pans or use something to put pans on to protect the surface.

Osmo is the best!

Osmo!

I use the raw one so my oak tops don't go orange, they've retained the grey toned look from when they were fitted as the osmo raw is slightly white tinted. I loathe orange oak tops... irrational I know.

Osmo seems to be winning hands down.

Would I need to restrip the worktop and resand before applying it took a day and a half and so much dust

Yes you would - I did after Danish oil proved poor at protecting the wood. Sand it down from coarse to fine grades, clean with methylated spirits and follow the instructions on the tin.

WheelyCote · 07/05/2018 17:29

I thought so!! Nooooooooo

We only gave ours a light sand and it was fine.

Although you will need to where the black mark is!
