Install french(?!) doors

Hi everyone

We live in a classic Victorian mid terrace. Not much room to swing a cat. Our downstairs living room has been knocked through to the dining room to make one long room, which unfortunately, can be a little dark. I'd like to take out the existing window and install glass double doors to get in to the garden. Does anyone have any idea how much something like that would roughly cost??

I really don't want to get companies out to quote us if it's going to be way more than we can afford.

a couple of grand roughly (for bog standard doors)

About £1,000 for the doors themselves. Extra for fitting (£500-ish). Plus will you need a step outside to get into your garden/yard? You would presumably need a hole made in the wall and some remedial brickwork where the existing window is? The latter would be around £600-£1000. May also depend on where you live - if in London presumably more!

That includes knocking out wall to make room for the doors? That's manageable I thought it would be worse

Thank you. Another stupid question - I'd have to get a builder to knock the hole and a separate window person to fit the doors?

Not sure of what is normal but do know that Our builder had put windows in before so helped us measure up and order (went direct to a local company he often used) then did the fitting/ brickwork himself. Neighbour is a builder and also did his own windows.

OP, we had one person to do the knocking out/brickwork, another company to make the doors, and a joiner to fit them.

We did this 3 years ago, best thing we did!

I think it was around £1100 for eveything in London. The people who installed the doors took out the wall and made good the plaster around it on the inside.

Wished we'd done it when we first bought. Definitely do it!

A builder can do this sort of work, but also most good window companies will undertake the building and window part. You will then get a FENSA guarantee for the window and a document to say it complies to building regulations.
In the past we’ve gone down both routes, the builder, as it was part of a bigger project and the window co. because it was a one off.

We had one done with a bog standard double glazing company - it was very smooth. Only hold up was a need for a building warrant which took months - this was years ago so not sure what’s currently required.
