Have decided to go for a peninsula rather than an island - what do you think of this layout? Basics in place - what other units / functions do I need ? The room is 5m x 12 - have only shown one end

Your layout is similar to ours, we have the door from hall, utility door and glass onto the garden too, we went for an island. I think I would get annoyed when walking in from the hall I would have to walk all the way round the penisula to get in to the kitchen if you know what I mean. The kitchen is the first room we walk into from the hall and quite often I go to the sink (on the island) to make a hot drink (we have a boiling water tap). I know it's not a long way but it would drive me mad if I had to walk all the way round every time lol.

Our island is massive, we love it, I don't know how we would live without it. Everyone who comes round ends up round it whatever the occasion, we eat all our meals there, daughter does her homework. I put the laptop on it and work. I wouldn't change anything, it works perfectly :)
Some would have the hob on the island but I hate people watch me cook so I like to have my back to everyone lol!

Gin -- your kitchen is exactly as ours is now - I have a 2400 central island with sink and DW exactly where yours is. It hasn't worked for us as we are too messy and mostly my island is a sink full of dirty dishes and a mound of drying pots on display in the centre of our room - so this was the main reason to redesign our kitchen.....to move the sink out of sight.

I could keep the island layout and move the sink - but I feel that I want a completely new lay out for the refurb.

We have a dishwasher under the island that we put everything, it has an option for a half wash so even if we don't fill it completely we tend to use it. How about putting the hob on the island and the sink at the back as this works for a lot of people. We use our island loads and would really miss it so probably watch how the island is used over the next few days see if you miss it.

Allthebubbles · 04/05/2018 13:18

We have a peninsula behind a 1.2m wall, it works really well to keep mess out of site, but we do have the hob on it so it also acts as a splash back. I also used to have an island and it was a mess. I love our current layout as it splits kitchen and dining really nicely.

Allthebubbles · 04/05/2018 13:18

Sight not site!

namechangedtoday15 · 04/05/2018 14:16

I agree with Gina, it would drive me made having to walk around the peninsula to use the kitchen. If you definitely want to close off the gap between an island and the hallway wall, I'd shorten the peninsula.

DairyisClosed · 04/05/2018 14:17

Isn't the sink to far зонд the corner?

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 04/05/2018 14:19

I would look again at your 3 full height units beside the utility room door. At the moment you have Oven-FFreezer-larder. I wouldn't personally put the oven and the FF next to each other. Maybe put the larder in the middle and the FF on the end?

PETRONELLAS · 04/05/2018 14:24

I love the peninsula. When you come in from the hallway you’ll just dump stuff on the left and walk round. I wouldn’t want a double sink and would want a cupboard to store ironing board/vacuum cleaner if they had to be in the kitchen. I did wonder if 3m would make it feel too enclosed if there were lots of you getting breakfast etc

another20 · 04/05/2018 14:30

Should have said that our utility is also a boot room with side access, so this is where I and most of family will be coming in and out of the house with shopping etc so the peninsula isn't in the way.

I quite like the idea of keeping the business end of the kitchen (cooking/washing) in a contained zone without others passing through and then the social / accessing the fridge at other end of the units.

I know that I am going against the grain - chucking out my island - but it hasn't worked for us. We prefer to sit at the table to eat, home work etc - facing and I don't want stools up at the pennisula.

Any thoughts on what storage/gadgets etc I need around the appliances in this lay out ?

choc - thanks - yes better to do Oven/larder/FF left to right.
dairy / petron - yes double sink is a reaction to all the clutter/dishes piled up currently on display right bang in the centre of my kitsch on the current island - 2 sinks was so that drying pots could be hidden rather than on a draining board. The RHS sink would be the work horse - the LHS sink basically a sunken draining board.

I'm totally in agreement with you. I hated the island which was in the house when we bought it. I couldn't stand kids running round it and I now love having my cooking area separate. Our peninsular is just under 2m long.
As we had the hob on the old island it splattered everything when we cooked.

another20 · 04/05/2018 16:57

Allthebubbles I have 4 kids I have swerved skate boards, scooters, rip-sticks etc as they all careered around my island.......I was even laughing with the designer yesterday to install some sort of electric fence at the end of the U !!

That would be genius! I'm pretty territorial about by cooking zone too!

MrsFezziwig · 04/05/2018 23:56

Agree with you about the double sink - I have no idea why anyone would have a draining board rather than a second sink. All a draining board does is put your drying pots on display. A second sink hides draining pots, and can be used as a back up if the first sink is in use. Win-win.

NotMeNoNo · 05/05/2018 13:10

In your layout the sink and hob are clashing if you imagine someone trying to get to both.

I would put sink on the run where the hob is and hob on the long unused length. If you are worried about mess/people touching hob, have an upstand along back of peninsula.

NotMe - thank-you - I like the second picture - wish I had seen that type of half covered / up-stand option before - would have saved me digging up 4m of concrete floor to reposition the sink....!

If I moved the hob to the peninsula and the sink to where the hob is - is that not just the same in terms of pinch point?

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 05/05/2018 14:05

I think just make sure neither is too close to the corner. Have say a good metre from corner to hob.

another20 · 05/05/2018 15:08

it might be good to swap position of hob and sink so that extractor fan housing can tie in with floor to ceiling units on the back wall and then I wouldnt need any high level units on LHS wall above sinks?

Was also thinking that I could shunt DW along to go in bottom of tall larder unit so this would free up more work top space for double sinks. Would need to shuffle the order of tall cabinets - and could use space above DW as appliance garage for toaster, microwave? Would I miss my only floor to ceiling larder then for food storage?

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 05/05/2018 15:23

kitchen zones this may help you with layouts.

I would keep dishwasher near sink and storage in one area as far as possible. Island extractors can be ducted across the ceiling neatly.

another20 · 05/05/2018 15:39

Thanks - that link is brilliant - what I can work out is that prep zone should be between sink and cooker - I could install an additional small tap and sink for rinsing veg pre-prep on the peninsula as this is where I had envisioned prep - so that double sinks are solely for washing up and rinsing before DW.

Would you put quooker tap on small prep sink rather than large sink? So could be used for boiling water for veg/pasta and hot drinks.

Might spread the load and avoid bumping about!

bakingdemon · 05/05/2018 22:58

We had a peninsula in our old flat and it worked really well. First thing I'd question here is the sink location - it's so far into the corner that you can basically only use one.

another20 · 06/05/2018 17:47

Thanks baking - the second sink (LHS) is really to act as a sunken draining board.......but I am worried about working at sink and accessing dishwasher -- seems squished. Tho if I had a small 2nd veg rinse sink and quooker in the corner of the peninsula it might take the stress off the one sink in the corner.
