Is 10x15 feet (3×4.7m) good size for eat-in-kitchen ?

I need to choose between open plan kitchen-diner and seperate eat-in-kitchen. I prefer seperate kitchen over open plan kitchen diner from functionality point of view but looks wise it hasn't got a wow factor. We will be living in house for next 8-10 years and I am worried a 10×15 feet kitchen will look like a galley kitchen when we come to sell.
I saw one house with 13×15 eat in kitchen and it felt good size but cannot visualize how a 10x15 kitchen would work.

Personally I think a space without an internal wall can be far more flexible and ultimately more functional. 10 x 15 ft isn’t a great space for an eat in kitchen in my view and will look cramped. Not much space for circulation and I cannot see how you will get a decent family table in. If you open it up, you can have kitchen storage in the dining area - crockery and glassware for example. This extends the kitchen and it looks more spacious. It would be a no brainier for me - kitchen and dining room to be one big space!

Our kitchen is a little bit smaller (around 3 x 4m) and it really doesn’t take much for it to feel cramped. (We are a family of 6 so that might be whySmile). It’s fine day to day for family meals but I hate trying to entertain in it - even if it’s just a couple of dcs friends in a play date. If you don’t have another dining space then it might be quite limiting.

We had a 3.6m by 4.5m kitchen and have just opened it up to the dining room. I would have preferred separate kitchen and dining room if big enough but with a small table in it felt cramped (though we do have 3 small children). Someone or something always in the way when loading dishwasher, trying to cook.
Am now sitting in my lovely big open plan kitchen diner and can't believe we considered keeping separate.

If we had an extra 1.5m of width i would have kept it but I think you need a least 4.5 by 4.5 for a comfortable eat in kitchen.

It very much depends on the layout of the room. Our kitchen is 3.1 x 5.2 and works fine with a table. I normally keep the table pushed up against the wall to maximise the space, but you can still open and load the dishwasher with the table pulled out and people seated. It's also quite a large table, but it does feel a little cramped if the table is kept permanently in the middle of the room.

Ours is 11’ by 14’ approx and it’s fine for the 5 of us. We have a good sized table in there and can extend it to fit up to 8 (9 at a push). When it’s extended it’s a bit cosy though!

We’re not the kind of family to treat the kitchen as the heart of the home - for us that’s the living room.

thank you so much for all your inputs. We would have a large living-dining space and a seperate living room too but i would have to carry the food to serve in that area when entertaining. it is so hard to decide.
seperate eat-in kitchen

  • would be good enough for day to day cooking and eating for us as family of 4.
  • kitchen mess and smells would stay contained and if i dont feel like tidying kitchen or loading dishwasher i could just leave it for later.
  • would feel cramped when friends come around as ladies would gather in kitchen for chat and also i would have to carry food to serve in living-dining area.
  • kids and dh would spend time in living dining area and i would be alone in kitchen though that could be good at times as i can listen to radio while they watch tv.
  • can leave kitchen windows open, run extractor on high and it wont make the whole house cold.

kitchen-diner
it looks great and feels more social. The kitchen would be stunning with large island, two hobs etc.

parkview your kitchen looks amazing. That does make me think seperate kitchen can look great too.

oh it is so hard to decide. i will post some layout pics.

Layout can also make a lot of difference to how big/small kitchen feels.

kitchen-diner is open-plan one.
layout-1 and layout-2 are different options for the separate eat-in kitchen.
do layout-1 or layout-2 look cramped?

  1. Open plan kitchen-diner-family room

2.Area showing seperate kitchen next to living-dining room. It has utility room area joined so there is more space than 10x14 feet.

Excuse the clutter, the photo was taken just as we finished doing the kitchen, but we have a similar size space and made a dining table out of worktop screwed into the wall.

Option 1 - by a mile. Do you entertain/ have family over? Do you have a nice garden (with view from back of house)? I can't see any advantage at all to having a small separate kitchen when you can opt for Option 1 (and have separate lounge etc at front of house).

mum2015 · 03/05/2018 00:34

Yes I have a beautiful garden to which those large doors will open in option 1 and I like cooking and frequently invite friends for dinner.
