Best paint brand for dark and bold colours?

Just that really.

We are about to embark on putting our own stamp on our very first home and we are wanting to paint our rooms in some dark and bold colours.

Which brands are good and do you have any tips for painting with such strong colours?

TIA x

Not never Valspar (google to see the nightmare people have had). Dark colours seem to be particularly problematic.

We've just used Craig & Rose (the 1829 range) for a dark blue for my son's room - actually called Payne's Grey and were really impressed.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 30/04/2018 14:58

Craig and Rose is lovely paint. My living room is Morris Blue which is gorgeous and only took one coat.

jp90 sorry should have specified indoor painting! We are very happy with our brickwork on the outside. thank you though!

namechangedtoday15 ah view glad you said that as actually colours we have chosen are Valspar!

BarbaraOcumbungles brilliant thank you!

I've personally never had problems with Valpsar - in fact moving out of old house retouched a very bold wall - colour was still true to fresh paint quite some years after painting.

4yearsnosleep · 30/04/2018 22:20

I had a valspar tester of a dark blue that was awful. Dried lumpy and patchy. Best out of the samples I tried were Farrow & Ball, dulux trade & Mylands

villageshop · 30/04/2018 23:01

Farrow and Ball wins every time for us, and we've tried practically everything else over the years.

TwittleBee · 01/05/2018 06:19

Thank you all. Perhaps we should get testers in a few types

Not Farrow and Ball. We tried painting over a white wall with Ammonite and the wall we started on was still patchy after three coats. The paint was horribly watery as well.

Got a colour match in Valspar premium, was almost completely covered in one coat and gave an excellent depth of colour in the second.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/05/2018 06:50

I use b&q premium- used tank green in our bathroom and marine blue (I think) in DD’s room- both very dark. I find they give excellent coverage, no streaks.

Baxdream · 01/05/2018 07:28

We painted our snug in valspar v500 blue fringe. It's still patchy after 6 coats!!
Once we're emotionally ready we're going to use farrow and ball to redo it

TwittleBee · 01/05/2018 08:09

Oh so many contradictions! This is going to take some serious looking into.

The sorts of blues we are looking at would be:
Craig & Rose Smalt
Farrow & Ball Drawing Room Blue
Valspar Egyptian Blue

The greens we like:
Farrow & Ball Calke Green
Craig & Rose Deep Adam Green
Valspar Mixedwood Leaf

Anyone had experienced with any of those exact colours?

I’d just get a load of testers tbh. Have only heard good things about Johnstones and they do colour matching

DialMforMordor · 01/05/2018 12:57

Last time we decorated we used a combination of Dulux and Little Greene. Little Greene has great paintcards with chips that you can fold over to see if the colour 'goes' with curtains/sofas/fabric, etc and the website is helpful at showing you which shades work best together.

RunMummyRun68 · 01/05/2018 13:15

Actually valspar is fine

Problem is people don't know how to use it and they don't know how to paint with dark colours. You need the correct undercoat with bold colours

RunMummyRun68 · 01/05/2018 13:17

Op.... you can take in your colour chart and have farrow and ball colours mixed in a valspar base free of charge Wink

The v700 gold tin is superior paint

namechangedtoday15 · 01/05/2018 15:41

Run believe me, it was the dreadful Valspar paint and not my lack of knowledge about how to paint Hmm. Just look up Valspar paint complaints on Google - are you suggesting ALL those people are just rubbish at painting?!! Confused

TwittleBee · 01/05/2018 15:52

What is the correct under coat and how do you paint with bold colours then? Honestly just thought it be like all other colours! Oops.

I agree named! I'm fairly certain I'm not an idiot.. definitely the paint!

sausagedogsmakechipolatas · 01/05/2018 16:28

I’m not an idiot either - and F&B was terrible in a light shade so I’d hate to see their dark colours!

RexManning · 01/05/2018 16:39

Little Greene.

RunMummyRun68 · 01/05/2018 18:40

namechange which undercoat and which colour?

Spanglybangles · 01/05/2018 18:58

Little Greene and Neptune

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 01/05/2018 19:01

No experience of painting with darker colours (yet) but both decorators we've used in recent years always say Dulux is their preferred paint before f&b, crown, valspar etc. So we've always stuck to Dulux and never been let down.

namechangedtoday15 · 01/05/2018 19:39

Run i would follow the manufacturers guidelines - certainly C&R's website, plus F&B's website tells you which undercover to use with each particular colour. It might be white / mid grey / dark grey depending on the colour.
