Is there any hope for my victorian tiles?

5 years after moving in finally felt brave enough to lift the laminate flooring laid by previous owners. Started off ok, I was feeling optimistic but soon discovered a load of cracked or missing tiles and even worse looks like they've been covered over in concrete.

I stopped taking the laminate up when I reached this point. Felt too sad to continue and now I'm thinking oh shit, what do I do now?

I've looked at grosvenor tiles but it'll be £600 just for the tiles. Don't have that kind of money.

Any advice? Help!

Is this site any cheaper? Downside is that they are metric sizes so are likely to be slightly different

i'd carry on and see exactly what was there and was missing.

I'd expect thresholds to be iffy/cracked/replaced/concreted but if the majority of the tiles were good I'd give them a good scrub with a plastic scrubby and see how they looked.

I'd also be tempted to paint in any missing ones ....faffing about with floor paint to get matches, and then use well placed threshold mats to disguise the iffy bits.

Some people are just the worst. Who could destroy such lovely tiles like that?

I used a lot of elbow grease after uncovering similar tiles in old flat. It made little difference. But, had some building work done and they must have used something stronger than fairy and they came up beautifully. Got any builder friends you could ask?

Lots of advice here: tilesoc.org.uk/tacs/index.php/conservation/cleaning-victorian-encaustic-floor-tiles/

Dumb question, but will elbow grease and dispose really get rid of the concrete? That's what the grey stuff in the photo is.

mshomeslice strangely the tiles at the entrance are in the best condition. That's why I thought that it looks promising and I should take the rest of the laminate up but about 2 metres in it's a disaster.

You can get some stuff called Lithofin which might work?

tethersend · 27/04/2018 19:33

Someone like these guys could do it by the looks of things.

Thanks for the advice. I'll post back once I have worked out what I'm going to do!
