Please help me choose between these kitchen designs

We're getting a new kitchen soon and are struggling to decide on the colour. The choices are a silver grey or graphite grey. DH and I prefer the graphite as it is a bit different. We are conscious we don't want to put potential buyers off in the future as we are hoping to add value to our home when we eventually upsize and move on. I am also slightly worried it may appear too dark.

Our kitchen is very light, there is an external door with a window in it not shown. There will be spot lights in the ceiling, under the counters and plinth lighting. We hope to have splash back in "dusted fondant" which is a sort of lilac/light plum colour (shown on the pics with the graphite units), white or off white walls and a nice blind - Not the officey one in the pic.

The worktops will be a white quartz possibly with a glittery flec with the graphite units or a black sparkly quartz with the silver grey lighter units. Undecided on the flooring, but something light like in the pictures.

Thanks in advance for any comments Smile

Second dark one looks dated.

I think it makes a difference how much light you have on the room too. And if it's facing North ?.

dotdotdotmustdash · 25/04/2018 18:32

I'm know I'm probably in a minority, but I'm really put off by kitchens that look clinical, especially if they're a stark black and white colour scheme. I think it's because I was a nurse for years and the treatment rooms were so clinical in their starkness!

Have you considered cashmere? Some of the ranges look like a very pale beige and others look like a warm grey. It's a warmer look that might be more universally popular if you plan to move on.

I would also steer away from the pinkish lights a they're definitely a personal taste.

It's not white. The 2 options (if you read the OP's original post are silver grey and dark grey)

Baxdream · 25/04/2018 19:16

Now I love dark colours and always say go for what you love!
But for resale I'd definitely choose the lighter units plus I think your kitchen is a bit small to carry it off.
I also vote for white quartz- we have it and it's easy to look after

I know it's not white, but it's still a pale and cool colour which looks clinical (to me) and not warm and homely. It's just a personal taste thing. I like at looking at houses for sale but I would really struggle to love a home that had a black/white/grey toned kitchen without feeling the need to rip it all out and put in something gentler.

The silver grey is darker in the flesh to the pics. I'll dig out the catalogue picture and post it. We will be careful to add some warmth to the grey with our decor.

After reading the comments DH and I are thinking silver grey units with a white "star light" quartz with "sharks nose" edging.

The graphites nicer, looks more adult and loungey. Xx

MacaroniPenguin · 25/04/2018 21:44

I was expecting to prefer the light one but actually I think it's a bit too neutral. The dark one works IMO. I'm not keen on the separate tall cupboard in the dark shade, but it wouldn't make sense to make it a different colour.

I like dusted fondant. It's definitely a purple, not a pink, and it's quite a dusky grown up shade IMO.

Fourmagpies · 25/04/2018 21:58

Could you choose a mid grey? We have dove grey (very pale grey) on wall units and bottom and tall units are slate grey which isn't quite as dark as graphite. We also have a white sparkly quartz and it's very robust, no staining, smears aren't easy to see.

LoftyLou · 25/04/2018 22:35

I would choose the top one, but with a mid grey worktop rather than black.

If feeling brave you could maybe have a patterned tile or vinyl on the floor to add some contrast and avoid it being too clinical. Eg: www.britishceramictile.com/laura-ashley/mr-jones-charcoal-floor-la52000?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIj-Xt5q_W2gIVyrftCh0C1wR_EAQYAiABEgL2E_D_BwE

Graphite looks classier and more expensive. Everyone's got white handle less (me inc!)

BlondeB83 · 26/04/2018 21:58

The grey is much better.

Ginandplatonic · 26/04/2018 22:10

I much prefer the second one. The top one looks very generic, which is probably why some of us are reading it as less "high end". Also hard to say without seeing the actual colour but very light greys can feel like a cold white. The darker looks warmer to me.

If resale really matters tho (ie you are selling in the next few years) maybe the light would evoke less strong opinions being neutral. Otherwise go with what you feel you love - you will be living in this room every day.
