Neighbour's noisy renovations (slight rant warning)

Hiya

Does anyone here know what the law is on when people are allowed to make a fuck of a lot of god awful fucking noise drill / bang etc during the week / weekends?

Lovely though they seem to be, my new neighbour's haven't stopped renovating since they arrived. And it's making me want to kill them a tiny bit.

Bank holiday Monday - from 8am angle grinder on stone slabs in back garden.

All week this week from 8:30am - drilling, banging, drilling, banging - as I work from home this was VERY disruptive indeed - had to go and work in a cafe.

Saturday morning 8:3am - woke up to very loud banging.

The irritating fuckers have moved out as well leaving us terraced neighbours on either side to suffer. They tell me it's going to last 6 weeks - am so pissed of with them (can you tell?).

Just wondering what the law is Re: timing of such disturbing noises is? So that I might "oh so politely" ask them to shut the fuck up!!! keep it down a bit.

Thanks.

Many councils have a "considerate builders scheme" or similar. Unfortunately you may find it allows work from 8-5 on weekdays and on Saturday mornings. Speak to the Council noise people. They probvably should not be working on a Bank holiday.

DustandRubble · 21/04/2018 10:40

Are they doing it or do they have builders in? There are restrictions on noisy work for firms, 8-6 on weekdays and 8 till 1pm Saturdays. Nothing on Sundays. I don’t think this applies to DIY though.

KarmaStar · 21/04/2018 10:41

Don't know of any rules op,sorry!
Ear plugs or earphones?
I hope that they turn out to be nice, quiet neighbours when it's completed.Flowers

PetulantPolecat · 21/04/2018 10:41

Differs from council to council but you’re lucky they’re professionals, as sometimes the advised times are for trade, not homeowner diy. 6 weeks versus 2 years of evening and weekend diy?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 21/04/2018 20:06

They are really nice.
They have proper polish builders in.
They are having a bank extension / side return job.
It's just a fucking nightmare noise wise.
I wouldn't say anything to them or be mean. Just need to vent. And trying not to hate them.
Confused

As they're making it impossible for you to work from home as you normally do, I'd be asking them to cover the cost of 6 weeks in one of those office hotdesking places, or for the additional cost of your commute into the office if there's one you can go to.

I had a very similar scenario a few years ago with new neighbours. Totally ruined any potential relationship and after the building works the CF had the cheek to complain he could hear the alarm on my phone going off in the morning through the floorboards...!

birdladyfromhomealone · 21/04/2018 22:54

we also have builders next door who have no planning permission , this is the view from my bedroom window, mon to fri noise 8am -6pm , our house is full of cement dust too

I feel your pain. We had that for 6 months straight & now its intermittent. Been going on for almost 2 years now with no sign of being finished any time soon. Its a complete eyesore with a permanent skip. We've been trying to sell up & move for a year now & its definitely putting people off! A surveyor didn't disagree when I said they've lost us 20k on our price. Selfish wankers! Angry

SarahSea1 · 22/04/2018 09:34

If it’s terrace do you not have a Party Wall Agreement? Often you can negotiate the times slightly. In our borough it’s 8-5 weekdays, 8-1 Saturdays. Good/kind builders should do their utmost to minimise disruption - no shouting, bad parking or radios. If they’re doing full refurb then six weeks is quite fast.

NurseryFightClub · 22/04/2018 11:41

We are renovating and I feel for my neighbours, we do some work at weekend but only in afternoons etc.
We spoke to them and told them what doing and length of time and they say they are OK so far ( 4months in)

Ariela · 22/04/2018 22:23

We have builders next door and next-door-but-one - NDB1 isactually quite a long way away as ND have a very wide garden and there is a field beyond that before NDB1. Last 2 mornings next door's builders were putting scaffolding up at 7.20am both days and today one van turned up before 7.30 but didn't hang about long, luckily we don't lie in as today NDB1 their builders turned up before 8 with the radio on so loud I thought daughter had put it on in the kitchen!

All of course outside of the local authority regulations: Mon-Fri 8am earliest start, 8.30am-1pm Sat & no noisy work on Sundays

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/04/2018 10:14

I have woken up this morning after a night of very disturbed sleep (snoring DH / DC2 climbing into my bed etc...) to drilling that sounds like it's IN MY HEAD.

It's honestly a fucking nightmare. I don't care if your neighbour's say it's ok - they are just being polite.

😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

oh you poor thing

I'm not sure how much laws cover this tbh

I suppose the only way things will change is if we lobby our councils, MPs etc to get better noise regs

what time was it that you woke up? I did once speak to some builders who were starting at 7 and they did then start at 8. They made major cat's bum mouth faces every time they saw me. Gits.

4yearsnosleep · 23/04/2018 14:43

Unfortunately everyone will have to do Renovations at some point & unless you live in the middle of nowhere, noise will be an issue. As long as they're working within approved hours, there's not much to be done. Fingers crossed that they are finished soon

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/04/2018 16:37

Hmm it's really not that they "have" to do it.

Maybe they have to do it to make the house work for them? Our house doesn't work in its current format which we didn't realize until we moved in, it's too expensive to buy what we want, so we have to extend to make the house work for us. I appreciate it's hard on you, but many people have to do work to their property. I doubt you'll manage your lifetime without disturbing the neighbours getting work done. Hopefully it'll be over soon and at least by doing it all in one go, that should be it for a long time!
