Getting smell of cigarette out of house

We have seen a house we like but as soon as we walked in the smell of smoke was quite strong. Is it possible to get rid of the smell by changing carpets or will it always linger?

I have heard if the smell is really bad replastering is required!

The house is only 2 years old so I’m hoping if can’t be too intrenched. But it would be a disaster to not be able to get rid of it

Yes you can get rid of it, but it takes time. I bought a house that stank of cigarettes. I only changed the carpet in the downstairs because it was old and worn. I used plug in air-fresheners for months, opened doors and windows at every opportunity, used Febreze on the carpets I didn't replace and eventually the smell disappeared. it did take a few months though! Oh, and I washed the curtains too.

I moved into a house that had been owned by smokers and even after deep cleaning the carpets and rewallpapering it was 6 months before I stopped smelling the smell :(

When I had a 5 year old housing association flat it stunk of cigarettes when I moved in, the floors were already bare but I mopped them with water and bleach before having carpets laid. I had to bleach all of the skirting boards, sockets and light fittings etc. I repainted everywhere and left the windows open for a week before moving in.

Sugar soap is very good at removing nicotine from surfaces - we used it years ago when buying an old house that had been smoked in for years, the ceilings were dark yellow!!
