Cost of new kitchen

Hi
Getting closer to starting our extension. Looking at kitchen prices I was just wondering roughly how much a new kitchen costs? The builders are doing all the electrics/ plumbing etc including plastering and decorating the room. I guess this means we would just have to pay for the fitting, units, splashbacks and appliances?
Where do people reccomend?

You need to start with your budget and what people wd expect in your property if they were buying it. For instance no point fitting a top end £70k kitchen in a semi worth 250k just as a Homebase kitchen in a McMansion would be daft.

How big is it?

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 17/04/2018 07:45

I think our house is worth about 550k. It is a four bedroom detached and it will be part of our kitchen family room. I believe it will be about 3 .5m by 3.5m in the end.

Value of the house is a daft guide really as house prices vary so wildly.

We're going for a big kitchen (28 cabinets), DIY Kitchens, granite worktops, 2 ovens, built in fridge & freezer and it's working out around £15k (£9k on cabinets, £2.7k on granite) Magnet would be closer to £20k, smaller independents (near us, may vary) £20k+, posher Kitchens like Tom Howley £30k+

Really you need to look at what you can afford, Visit kitchen showrooms, look on Pinterest & Instagram for ideas of what you like and go from there.

Where is your granite from please? We r looking at nearly £5000 to fit an l-shape of quartz with a depth of 900mm.

4yearsnosleep I'm looking at a kitchen from DIY Kitchens too but am a bit worried about measuring up myself! How did you find them? Sorry to hijack your post OP xx

Last year we had to choose between a bloody awful experience with a Wren kitchens showroom, and a really excellent one with Howdens. I'd recommend Howdens if you want good service. My mum would agree b/c she used them too.

That is a great price! We were quoted a ridiculous price for much less than 28 cabinets. Is that including fitting? It took us a while to get over the shock of 9K for our bathroom.

It depends. We got the cheapest kitchen of a decent quality we could find (a higher end Schuller range called Next 125), and it's coming in at about 25k with installation and all the little finishings (box for the hidden extractor fan and lights above the island, closing off above cabinets, etc). It's big though--6m run along the back wall with things like a floor to ceiling larder cupboard and a 3m island. The house is about 1.2 million, so didn't want to underspend too much and bring down the value of the house, but 25k still feels a lot to me. I reckon as long as it's a decent quality and we use good appliances and real stone for the worktops, it'll be fine.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 17/04/2018 15:55

Thanks everyone. 25k is probably abit above our budget! We used Howdens before I just wondered if there was anywhere better/ cheaper!

We're using diy kitchens & for kitchen + utility are paying around £10k total - £5k units, 3k quartz worktop & 2k appliances.

Quotes from magnet, wickes, local kitchen designer etc were all closer to £15k total.

4yearsnosleep · 17/04/2018 16:29

Fitting is £2k for kitchen and utility

Roann's were using for granite who I found on Mumsnet, though a local guy called today and offered to beat their quote by £100 (£2k less than his initial quote!) That's for a 2.6m x 1.6m island, 3.8 run, 2m run, 15cm upstands and a 1.8m windowsill.

Our highest quote was £5.9k for granite so it definitely pays to shop around.

We initially got designs from 3 different places. I have changed it quite a bit from those after visiting their showroom and ending up with bargain ex display appliances from Homebase that meant a change to designs. I put the order in during their January sales, but will be altering it once we have a plastered extension (& alterations will still be 10% off) Our measurements are fairly easy as the design will comfortably fit without looking odd +_ 40cm due to the shape of the room.

We've gone for Norton as I love the grain in the solid wood doors. Outer units are one of their stock colours and the island is bespoke.

Their showroom is fantastic and I highly recommend a trip. We tagged it on to a weekend away in Harrogate.
