attaching furniture to stud walls.

so, we have a new room which has been built with studwork walls. I need to attach Pax wardrobes and a couple of chest of drawers to one of the walls. I have a stud finder, but if they don't line up with where we need to attach the wardrobes are we better to use plasterboard screws, or to screw a length of batten to the studs and then attach the wardrobes to the batten?
Also-if we are screwing into the studs do we just use wood screws or do we use wall plugs through the plaster?

I would go with the batten but I'm no expert.

Seem to remember that ikea sell brackets for use with their kitchen wall cabinets to help in this situation. Maybe they do for your wardrobe ... or could you explore the idea of using the kitchen cabinet adapter.

A batten fixed with suitably long woodscrews will work well. Plasterboard is either 10 or 12.5mm thick usually. The studs will be at least 50mm so you want around 45mm of screw PLUS the thickness of batten.
If you can find each stud then it would be much stronger than plasterboard fixings.
May not be quite as 'neat' though, depending on your wardrobe design.

That looks good, but the attachments for the wardrobes aren't like that unfortunately. I think we'll prob use batten, just need to get a piece the right size.

If we are screwing through a skim coat and plasterboard into wood studs can we just use woodscrews or will we need wall plugs?

Just woodscrews are fine. Plaster skim and plasterboard is pretty soft.
The structure of the wall will be at least 3" X 2" wood, possibly thicker.
Yo would be screwing into wood that is 3" thick so your woodscrew should have about 40mm or so into that (50mm would also be fine). The plasterboard and skim is possibly 15mm thick so your woodscrew needs to be the thickness of the batten +15+40mm. You should not use wallplugs.
