What colour scheme would you choose for a sleek modern kitchen?

I'm having a crisis of choice and am second guessing my knee-jerk choice of a matt white handleless kitchen with flamed and brushed black granite for our new kitchen. It's a large modern open plan space (in a very modern new build) with big sliding glass doors along one wall. The white isn't too brightmore of an off-whiteand the black looks more charcoal gray with the textured finish that brings out the lighter bits in it, but I worry it might look boring and am wondering if I should turn things around and go for really dark cabinets instead (like a navy or anthracite or an almost black wood, though still in a sleek and minimal handleless style) with light worktops instead.

Flooring is wide plank brushed oak.

What do you think will stay looking 'fresh' for the longest period of time?? Would I be crazy to go for dark cabinets? It's a big kitchen--6m run of cabinets and worktop on the back wall and then a 3m island. There's a fair amount of light in the room, but as it's such a big open plan space I don't want lots of dark cabinets to swallow all of the light.

What do you think? Pic of current plan attached (though keep in mind flooring is wood and worktops not so dark, white not so bright).

Well Black is the new colour for kitchens.., does the image show your name btw?

Linguaphile · 15/04/2018 21:24

Oh crap, er, how do i get them to remove it?

I think black worktops with white units can look dated. I would go for white worktops everywhere with dark units on the island.
However i would just have what you love it will all date in the end!

I'd message mumsnet to remove your photo.

I've reported it OP

Linguaphile · 15/04/2018 21:37

Okay thanks. I've reported it and asked them to take it off. Ack! Confused

You could use dark base cabinets on the island unit and a white worktop.

Or make a feature of the part of the island where the stools are and have the same colour as the splash back. What are you planning for the splash back?

I was planning to use larger format marble subway tiles. Too predictable? Blush With darker cabinets they'd look better I reckon. I do love navy, I just worry it will date worse than white if that makes sense...?

We're currently having a new kitchen fitted and have gone for charcoal black base units and light grey wall units all in a very flat matt finish. Personally I think dark blue units will date quicker as it's so of the moment but ultimately anything will so you should go with what you like!

Believeitornot · 15/04/2018 22:07

Our new kitchen is handleless, matt white with sparkly white worktops.
We’ve gone for dark grey herringbone tiling on the wall and a navy island. Plus oak plank flooring.
Looks quite nice and modern if I may so myself.

Believeitornot · 15/04/2018 22:07

Plus we can replace the island with another colour if we decide it’s dated. But we’ve gone for what we like.

Linguaphile · 15/04/2018 22:15

Ah that sounds nice believe. Do you have a pic?

Thanks!

I spent a long time browsing Pinterest for ideas to pull together ideas. Very happy with it!

I have pale grey units but with dark grey island, all with pale worktops.
The dark grey matches the run of bifold doors out into the garden so it all hangs together. Not to everyone’s taste but ultimately I am the one living with it and I love it.

FluffyWuffy100 · 16/04/2018 21:18

@Believeitornot that’s stunning!

namechangedtoday15 · 16/04/2018 21:33

I think black worktop are dated already - I wouldn't have those. I agree that you could make a feature just of your island - white on the 6m run and a darker colour for your island? If you have the same (light) worktop throughout it will all tie together.

I have a two tone kitchen - very similar to the sound of it- 5m run and 2.5m island. Island is charcoal which I love and we have a marble copy quartz as the worktop (white with grey veins)

@namechangedtoday15 I think yours is very similar to mine:

Watching with interest.
Don't you think everything will date?

I really don't know what colour counter top to go for.
We are having gloss white handle-less doors.

Believeitornot · 17/04/2018 11:21

Thanks!
I don’t care if it dates - we love it Grin

namechangedtoday15 · 17/04/2018 11:33

I agree, at the end of the day, it's your house and your kitchen. If you're planning to sell in the next couple of years then if course you have to be mindful of the market.

Otherwise everything will date at some point. In the meantime, have something you love. Most people women spend tons of time in the kitchen and you need to enjoy spending time in there. I love my kitchen when it's tidy and don't really care if some interior designer thinks it will date in 5 years (we can have it painted) or that every man and his dog has a charcoal island Smile.

Baxdream · 17/04/2018 11:39

I agree unless you're getting some crazy expensive kitchen just go for whatever you like. Ours is modern but in five years it won't be but I'm okay with that!
