I have googled and googled and got a couple of the big companies to give us a quotes but it is not what we are looking for. We have never done any sort of building work so I am at a loss where to begin....
The lean-to was already in place when we moved in and has all the classic problems of leaking roof and being freezing in winter i.e. unusable for 70% of the year.
It consists of the sloping roof and the windows/door facing out into the garden.
The two side walls are solid brick - one joining onto our extension and the other shared with neighbour, so both side walls are internal.
Therefore, we only need to replace the roof and the "wall" that has the windows and door facing the garden.
We want to maintain as much of the light that this lean-to brings in, as that side of the house is north facing.
We also want to replace the white UPVC frames with aluminium/crittal.
Will having aluminium/crittal frames with glass panels maintain the heat? I presume not, as I see lots of extensions with large bifold doors and glass roofs from the train!
Do I first need to ask a builder to have a look and they will then advise or do I go to a company for quotes?
If the latter, any recommendations? We asked Everest and Anglia (I think) and they put me off with their pushy sales pitch and over-inflated prices plus they only seemed to do thick UPVC frames.
Sorry for the long post - I am keen to avoid a third winter with a freezing conservatory.
TIA!
