Buying in Farnborough - good/bad idea?

Hi All... Smile

We are looking to move and have been looking at properties in a few areas. But the nicest property that we have seen so far that offers the space we want etc is in Farnborough. I keep reading bad things about the area but when we drove around on Saturday we didn't see anything untoward (possibly cos it was between 10.30-11.30am!).

So the property we like is just off West Heath road.

I would really appreciate any experiences or opinions of this particular area. We also have a 3 year old that is going to be going to school next September so any opinions or experience of both primary and secondary schools in the area (we plan on living in this house long term) would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance x Smile

Farnborough in Kent?

Mirandasbestmate · 10/04/2018 19:26

I don't know that west Heath area that well, but Farnbrough itself is ok. I think the schools are cove infants / juniors & fernhill secondary school. I think the cove schools a re ok. The town centre is a bit run down but has all the basics- you also have very good rail & road links to nicer places. I like it a lot more than I thought I would. What would the west Heath road be like during rush hour ? I have a feeling it gets quite busy so you'd need to think where you'd be trying to get to at that time.
Please ask if you need any more help.

Sorry Farnborough in Hampshire...I should have specified...Blush

Thank you for your reply and all the info Mirandasbestmate Smile...I will need to commute to Heathrow Airport but currently work early and late shifts so don't really encounter traffic.. but I am hoping to move to head office within my company in the next year or so, so do need to think about it. My husband works all over the place so it doesn't make a difference to him where we live. Do you live in Farnborough? Which area if you don't mind me asking?

When I looked at the crime rate for the area it wasn't great reading and there was a stabbing near cherrywood primary school in January...all these things are starting to put us off...also there doesn't seem to be any good State Secondary schools in the area Confused..

I don't know Farnborough but if you like that area but want a place known to be "nice" have you looked at Fleet or Farnham?

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 10/04/2018 20:52

I was quite anti Farnborough (lived in fleet) but could afford more in Farnborough so bought here 4 years ago. I really like it. Amazing transport (right on m3, Farnborough main and north stations plus I can walk almost everywhere) . I'm not sure where the road you mention is but I live 5 min walk from George V playing fields. Farnborough Park is really nice but v v expensive. I suppose the downside is no nice 'centre' - no nice restaurants or pubs to go to but now I've got a baby that doesn't bother me!

Mine went to North Farnborough Infant School and then Frimley C of E. We looked at Cove - it seemed lovely but wasn’t as convenient. I taught for a bit at Tomlinscote which wasn’t too bad - there’s always Farnborough Hill if you have girls Smile (my kids had swim lessons there)
If I’m honest, we headed out to Camberley for groceries rather than Farnborough itself, or Frimley (Waitrose lol). Our street was a lovely leafy enclave - not sure where you are.
Farnborough varies enormously from well-to-do to standard mid sized town. It’s on the border of Surrey darling Wink
We found it very helpful in terms of location - well connected by road - my commute was about an hour and a half drive (away from London) but dh was in and out of the city all of the time (train).
Although my bike did get nicked at the train station. I’m still sore about that.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 10/04/2018 20:58

If I'm still in this house I hope my girl will go to north Farnborough infants, St. Peter's then Farnborough Hill (amazing school) for secondary

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 10/04/2018 21:06

I live in Farnborough. The town centre is pretty joyless but we only really go there for the cinema. Camberley and Fleet are on the doorstep so we class those as our local town centres Grin West Heath Road is a nice community area. Also look at Southwood. Avoid around Prospect Road and near the football ground as they're not so great.
I moved here from London 4 years ago and it's definitely home.

Mirandasbestmate · 10/04/2018 21:14

Stabbings are thankfully quite rare round here! North Farnbrough school has a very good reputation as does south Farnbrough. North camp has a Nice village-y feel to it and is a 25 min walk into FB town centre.
Town centre has big asda, Sainsburys,& a cinema. As others have said, Farnborough is very easy to get out of, and there are some very nice places within easy reach - Farnham, fleet, Guildford & Cambelery. It's a good area to be with young children as there is lots going on.
I know your DD is only 3 but be aware that farnborugh hill is very competetive to get into, & Check out catchment areas for preferred schools. Lots of building work going on & catchments are getting squeezed!

Perfecthome409 · 10/04/2018 22:13

Thank you all so much for your replies...I really appreciate it Grin

dickiedavisthunderthighs this property is on Watts Road so it is a bit too close to the football ground and Prospect road as you mentioned. I think we will give this one a miss but will look out for others in Farnborough...

I have a little boy so wouldn't be looking at Farnborough Hill but wouldn't be able to look either way as we couldn't afford it!

GlennRheeismyfavourite good to know that you are liking the area. We are moving from a less than desirable estate in Slough so at this point anything will seem better in comparison! Lol

Thank you all again..Smile

I was a governor at NFIS. It’s adorable Grin we didn’t use St Peters because of the buildings (dd2 has a disability so Frimley was better) but that’s a great school too.

Fionad45 · 30/11/2020 00:19

I don’t know it but my parents moved there a couple of years ago, they live near Tower Hill primary which is apparently a good school but they are really happy there, they’ve moved a lot but have settled in that area. The area does look a bit rough when I visit but they’ve had no issues and have good neighbours.

Mumtofourandnomore · 30/11/2020 12:56

Cove and Fernhill aren’t very good schools, they don’t have a very good local reputation and I’d avoid them if I were you. I don’t have first hand experience of them though so hopefully somebody else can provide more specific advice on SEN provisions etc.

Sunshine4019 · 30/06/2021 19:57

@Perfecthome409 I know this is an old post but did you make the move to farnborough ? What’s your commute like into Heathrow?
