Is there anything I can do with my laminate?

Its in the living room and has a large rug over it but it looks awful with our furniture. Would it need taking up completely to get anything different? Anyone know what the cheapest solution would be to update it? Dh isn't keen on carpeting it as we walk through it to get to other rooms but not sure if there is an alternative that wouldn't cost a fortune?

Take it up and see what the floorboards are like underneath maybe?

Cut out the bad bits and insert a rug? This depends if it would make sense in the room. Difficult to see from the photo.

I just laid fancy lino in our hallway all by myself! You can get some lovely ones and you just cut it out and lay it down - ours didn't even need gluing or anything as it was less than 12m2. I laid it over ply but you could perhaps even lay it straight over the laminate for a cheap (£100-200) and easy fix?

That looks smart ratrolypoly!

Thanks! I'm a total convert to lino; no more scrubbing muddy buggy wheel marks out of the carpet for me Grin

Lino's come a long way in quality I think.

Mortigua · 09/04/2018 14:14

Thanks- too big a space for a rug to cover it and not sure if it is just concrete underneath -floorboards would be great though if so. Does laminate come off easily or would I need some sort of glue remover (clueless)?
Love that lino!we have lino in the hall and bathroom, that one is much nicer though.

Where is that lino from if you don't mind?might work well in our hall too.

It's the "palace" sheet vinyl from www.best4flooring.co.uk

Take it up and see what the floor boards are like... our whole down stairs is sanded and varnished, hallway 2 large living rooms, dining room and kitchen, it's cost us £750 for the lot so one room wouldn't be too expensive and it looks nicer!

Mortigua · 09/04/2018 15:10

Think I will get some of that for our bathroom-mind you it may be harder to lay there with the layout so maybe I should try the hall to practise first!
Would love wooden floor boards. The ones upstairs were pretty rubbish looking though. Did you do it or pay for someone to sand etc?

I meant because my hall is tiny- maybe 1.t by less than a metre and no fittings or furniture to work round. Bit daunted all the same but I guess if I order the size I need it may not need glue even ?

Lino, love it totaly waterproof can be mopped and you can get it so it looks like real wood floor.

Excuse the bags best picture I could find of our old living room floor.

It won't need glue for a small area - I didn't glue ours and it's about 6m long! The info on the website said I didn't need glue if the area was less than 12 square metres. If it's a very small area you could probably buy twice the amount you needed and have back-up in case it all went wrong! Just make sure you have a good sharp craft knife.

Mortigua · 09/04/2018 15:44

Good idea RatRolyPoly and I think I will try it! Amazing it didn't need gluing or attaching!
MigGril is it lino in the picture do you mean? I think our living room may be too big to do lino -would defo need gluing as it merges with the other rooms (open plan nightmare of a layout) but I do like the idea of less noise if something is dropped- drives me mad with the laminate such a sharp.noise..

Yes that's lino it was a large ish room living room dinner open to front door. No area is to big it's all about how they fit it. We chose lino as it's totally washable/sealed and the best recommed for those with allergies like my son.

Mortigua · 10/04/2018 09:06

Great thank you I can totally see that with the allergies,my dd had severe excema as a baby and I was constantly hoovering (had laminate in the flat we lived in then).
Lots to think about. Should have said we have a tiled fireplace...just realised if I take up the laminate it won't be even where it meets the floor!
