Do I have to change my kitchen worktop to put in new sink?

I have 2 questions here for the kind advisors on this wonderful site: Plumber/kitchen fitter tells me to put in a new sink I will need to change the worktop
Putting in a new worktop is the main time consuming part of redoing the kitchen and given the small size of my kitchen I may as well just get the whole lot changed

If you could find a new sink to fit the hole exactly then that would work. If the worktop is of a sort that the plumber can cut then a sink larger than you currently have is doable.

with the caveat that the supporting structure underneath fits around a new sink if it is larger than the old one.

what is your worktop made of?

I think it is laminate. All I want is kitchen update eg new sink , doors, drawer fronts etc but they are telling me I may as well as have the whole lot pulled out . It is about £200 to fit a new sink (I have the new sink) and my kitchen is very small so the worktop is not exactly huge

The worktop only has one join in it

A laminate worktop is not difficult to cut, if you need you make the hole a bit bigger for the new sink. However if the new sink has a smaller cut out, it will fall through a bigger hole, or at least leak or be badly supported.

It's normal to fit the worktop, with sink, after all the units have been put in place, so it is a smaller job than fitting new units.

Laminate worktop is not expensive (unless you choose a boutique supplier)

Kitchen companies like to charge more than builders merchants

Thanks so much. I really do not want my units pulled out. I will be selling the place in a few years so it is pointless. The new sink was chosen by my old builder (since died hence taking on new tradesmen) I think the new ones may have an account with Howdens . Quoted £2000 verbally for a new kitchen which is not bad but once you add appliances etc it will be more
