House without bath

In a 2 bed terrace (so unlikely to ever be a big family home but potentially a young family with 1dc) would it be massively off putting to you if there was no bath?

Current bathroom is very small, has one of those triangular baths with shower over to save space, but as a non-bath user I am considering getting rid of the bath and putting in a walk through shower.

I am single and no dc, so for me perfect, but I am worried a little about resale.

Do you feel strongly about this? Or a non-issue?

Yes - it would put me off buying a house. Baths are an essential for me.

Sallycinnamon17 · 08/04/2018 21:15

It would definitely put me off a property having no bath and us having a young child. Unfortunately this is our current situation as every property in our price range (renting) seems to only have a walk in shower and it’s a nightmare which results in a flooded bathroom every ‘bath’ time. We have to use a plastic baby bath with isn’t very practical and DD is terrified of the shower. I also secretly miss being able to have a good long soak.

scaredofthecity · 08/04/2018 21:15

It's a deal breaker for me, we're in a 2 bed terrace now. Baths are essential.

Redglitter · 08/04/2018 21:17

I can't wait to get rid of my bath and get a lovely big shower but then I don't have children. When I was house hunting and looking at 2 bedroom houses the vast majority had shower or wet rooms and no bath. They still sold very quickly

Zioanna · 08/04/2018 21:19

I bought a house without a bath and installed one before I moved in. I took into account the cost when making an offer though. If I was viewing a house without a bath I’d want to at least be sure there was enough space to put one in.

Magpie24 · 08/04/2018 21:21

A bath is essential for me, in the winter I have about 3 baths a week. But my DP has had one bath since we moved into our house 2.5 years ago!

Magpie24 · 08/04/2018 21:21

I should clarify that he does use the shower...!

vilamoura2003 · 08/04/2018 22:11

Also considering removing the bath as we don't bath. I couldn't think of anything worse than sitting in my own dirty water. I would have to shower afterwards Grin

Angryosaurus · 08/04/2018 22:34

I’d want room to be able to install a bath at least

GrumpySausage · 08/04/2018 22:40

We're having a new bathroom installed and have decided to go for a big walk in shower rather than a bath. I'm conscious it is likely to put people off if we sell but as we're not planning on moving for many years we decided to go for it. We're also willing to to replace it with a bath when we move (10+years)

None of us use a bath including DS3. The walk in shower will suit us much better.

Voice0fReason · 08/04/2018 22:50

Would definitely put me off. I would have to take into consideration the cost and inconvenience of redoing the bathroom.

Follyfoot · 08/04/2018 22:52

If I liked two similar houses, I'd buy the one with a bath. If I loved a house without a bath, I would only buy if the price reflected the cost of putting one in.

Floralnomad · 08/04/2018 22:55

It would definitely put me off if a house had no bath .

elQuintoConyo · 08/04/2018 22:58

I hate baths, much prefer a shower and so does our 6yo. So i'd buy your house!

dancingqueen345 · 08/04/2018 23:09

Very interesting split here all, thanks for responding!

There are plenty of other rooms I could spend my money on so I think this one will go on the back burner for now.

It would put me off, baths are not exactly essential but really important for lots of families with young kids! Baby baths are ok for young babies but I'd say for most families there's a gap between baby bath stage and shower stage. My DS is nearly 3 and still won't go in the shower.

dotdotdotmustdash · 08/04/2018 23:13

I would view your house, but I would mentally knock £5k off any offer I might make in order to redo the bathroom and put in a bath.

Els1e · 08/04/2018 23:14

It wouldn’t bother me as prefer showers. Unless you are planning to live in the house for a few years, I would suggest doing what suits you best.

MovingAgainOhWhy · 09/04/2018 00:22

It would massively put me off atm as I have young DCs that can't shower. Also, I need a bath to soothe joint pain

starfishmummy · 09/04/2018 00:40

It has out us off. We looked at a family house (3 beds) and they had taken the bath out if the small bathroom. House was otherwise lovely but it was a dealbreaker for us as house was top of our budget so we woukdnt have been able to remodel

notangelinajolie · 09/04/2018 00:52

Bathrooms should have baths. But a bathroom with no bath wouldn't matter to me because I would want to put my own new bathroom in anyway. I would however make a lower offer on a property with no bath.

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2018 01:06

I rent my house as I'm working away for the next year or so. I have a downstairs bathroom with shower. My tenants have a three year old and they don't have any problems with it. I never take baths would much prefer a shower.

GreenTulips · 09/04/2018 01:09

Sallycinnamon17

Have you seen these?

House without bath
UndomesticHousewife · 09/04/2018 01:12

We’re going to take the bath out of the main bathroom when we redo it as we don’t use it now but we’re not planning on moving.
It wouldn’t bother e not having a bath if I was buying a house unless I had babies then it would be a problem.

AntiHop · 09/04/2018 01:14

Don't assume a family wouldn't buy it. We're looking to buy and most of what as can afford are 2 bed terraces.

But if you're not planning to move soon, do what's right for you.
