Where to live rurally with once/twice a week commute to Glasgow

We are renting at the moment, with our 3 children (one in P2, pre-school twins. We've rented in quite a rural place for the last three years and prefer it over city living. I need to go into Glasgow two or three days per week, but can often stay over with a friend one night. Important are good schools, outside space, at least 4 bedrooms and a house that is more or less ready to move in, preferably with nice views. Somewhere with a good sense of community and where our children would be able to go see other kids without having to be ferried to an fro in time would be great. We have found some nice places we can afford near Moffat, (our maximum budget is 350k) but were wondering if there are other possibilities we are missing. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be fab.

What about Crieff or Auchterarder? We are an hour commute from Glasgow. Beautiful scenery... great facilities and schools.

Bridge of Allen

Train station,
Near Stirling ( station train+ buses easy to get to Glasgow)
Good schools
University (thinking ahead Grin )
I used to go horse riding round that area , you can get right out into the wilds there.

sorry all, we had a 3rd birthday party here today, so haven't been checking.

Cannae, that is the kind of thing we like, we're trying to plan a viewing. If you know of anything similar, please let me know.

Mrsx79 thanks, I hadn't considered Crieff or Auchterarder, will have a look. Do you know of any good properties for sale?

notagoodidea I saw your earlier thread, and I really love your house and its location, but we can't afford it :(

What about Houston/Bridge of Weir

Only 25/30 mins to Glasgow. Regular direct buses or the station is 10mins away.

The schools are excellent, especially Gryffe High.

30 mins in the other direction and you're in Ayrshire with lovely beaches etc

Just a note about Auchterarder - there is barely any out of school childcare provision. Not sure if this is something to consider. The school has something like 24 places for after school care, and that’s for primary plus secondary. I know there is currently a community movement to push for more childcare in the area as it really affects working parents (and that’s usually Mums).

Thanks SingingSands that is important to know with three kids and the two of us working.

Okay so if you prefer older houses there's this near Helensburgh. I think it's stunning but Victorian homes can be expensive to heat so ask about bills.

South of Glasgow there's these

In the area for Strathaven Academy

Trains to Glasgow and Edinburgh within walking distance

Closer to Biggar

I hope you find what you're looking for.

Mrsx79 · 09/04/2018 18:34

This is simply stunning. Again over but market is slow this is a bit further out but I think it wouldn't be too bad commute wise for the views😁 www.pspc.co.uk/property/53440/St+Fillans+Dundurn+Walk+Detached+Villa

To the south of the city: Eaglesham, Jackton, Neilston, Dunlop, Stewarton,

North: Strathblane, Blanefield, Kippen, Drymen, Lennoxtown, Torrance

Lochwinnoch, Uplawmoor, Fenwick

All of these have a villagey feel & are commutable, although you may have to drive to a station first.

I wouldn't like to go Crieff to Glasgow as a commute! And whilst bridge of Allan is lovely, it's more like a suburb of Stirling nowadays. Dunblane is just up the road & has better schools but not as pretty.

There are some nice places out along the railway line from Helensburgh eg Rhu.

Sevendown · 10/04/2018 09:21

You could also try posting this in Scotsnet.

If the schools are a priority, choose which ones you would’ve happy with first then look at what’s in those catchments.

Balfron and Gryffe high schools are good as are the east ren schools that aren’t in Barrhead and the east dun schools that aren’t in kirky.

There’s also Dunblane and Moffat and Linlithgow for further out.
