Colour of new bathroom

We’ve got a new bathroom with white fixtures, white tiles, chrome fittings and mid grey units (cupboard, bath panel etc). The floor tiles are an off white and dark grey, almost black, pattern. The door & skirting are painted white with the walls and ceiling just primed with white so far.

It looks ok with white but I’m not sure it will look complete. I’m considering a teal colour but worry it won’t suit as it’s quite dark and bold. The only bits to paint are next to the cupboard, around the toilet and next to the sink with the towel radiator, less than half the walls with the door in the middle.

Any ideas on good colours to consider or whether or not to go for teal or stick with white?

I love orange, so would play around with shades of that to see if a burnt orange or a bright tangerine (or somewhere in the middle) would work

Oooo I’m not really an orange fan so hadn’t considered it. I can see a burnt orange could work but having a google is showing lots of very modern interiors. It seems to be the same for yellow. It’s semi traditional in a Victorian house. My googling ended up with liking another picture of grey with teal in a traditional room.

I really don’t want to paint it grey and not pink or purple, DH has vetoed anything vaguely red anyway. Turquoise and aqua type colours seem too modern as well. Hmm.

I am having almost exactly the same debate! I've got very pale grey tiles (floor and wall) and white fittings and units. A pale grey glass mosaic panel in the shower cubicle, but otherwise it's very pale.

We only tiled half the walls (because it was £10 per tile!), so there's lots of opportunity for colour to brighten it all up.

I was so confident beforehand of a nice duck egg colour, but every test pot we get looks rubbish! And I know I'm not one of these people that can miraculously pull a look together, even if I attempt to copy something I've seen working in a picture on pinterest. I'll be following this keenly!

I'd stick with white and put the colour in with towels and blind.

Yep, stick with the white/grey's, and add colour in your towels and mats etc. orange would work well. We've got a white, sage, grey, and orange accessories thing going on, it's lovely

Yellow can be traditional, OP. Get hold of a Farrow and Ball colour chart, pin it up in your bathroom for a week or so and see if any of the colours jump out at you

I’m still loving teal and vardo is lovely. I’m just a bit scared it won’t be right. Ammonite seems a good, complementary neutral. Any advice? I’ve added pics to help.

Ive just seen a bathroom that is white with grey tiles and floor, with mustard coloured (old gold is a traditional colour) towels. It looked lovely.

Orange would be your friend in there.... with a wee bit of turquoise/teal thrown in too

Kismett · 09/04/2018 20:53

I think brighter colors like orange, yellow, teal all look more modern. Mind, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with putting that in your house if that’s what you like. And the cabinet and mirror are quite modern looking. If you want something more traditional I’d maybe go for a less saturated version of a color that you like.

You can do pretty much anything you want here. Think about how you want the room to feel (bright, relaxing, etc.) as that might help narrow down your colour choices.

I think a sagey green could look nice and calming.

BubblesBuddy · 09/04/2018 21:28

I agree with sticking to towels and the blind in a bright colour. Accessories too. A non relaxing colour on the walls is not for me! I have used Mizzle by F&B with white bath etc and have orange towels! Looks good to me.

RagamuffinCat · 09/04/2018 21:42

A deep blue? I love all the navy that is around at the moment for other rooms.

MillyMolly123 · 10/04/2018 20:37

It depends on how you want the room to feel. With your bathroom furniture and tiles I think brighter colours will look more contemporary, muted ones will look more traditional and create a calming feel. I will say my friend recently painted a bedroom in Vardo. It really is a strong colour and quite in your face. Despite being convinced she’d love it, she hated the end result, didn’t find the room relaxing and had to have it all covered with something softer.

If I were you I’d probably want something other than white, but nothing too bright which may cheapen the look and date way sooner than I’d want to re-paint!

How about a calming light/mid blue such as Bone China Blue by Little Greene paints. We’ve used LG in our house and found it far superior to F&B, especially if you have grubby handed kids!

I honestly love the colour of the primer! Think it looks really relaxing and blends well with the room. Maybe a warmer grey? I know you said you didn’t want to paint grey but a warmer one with very subtle hints of lilac might work?

Lots to consider thanks, I think I’m going to live with the white and get a better feel for it. From the feedback I’m feeling a neutral is the best bet so need to decide the tones. It’s complicated by the lighting - low level due to a small high up window (changed the window position and size for privacy). And also spotlights and the mirror which can be changed from warm to cool, dimmed or put on and off separately. Relaxing and refreshing would be nice but could be achieved by the lighting. I’m tempted to pop into a F&B shop for their advice but I’m not wholly convinced about super expensive paints. Builders have always put me off. It will be diy this time, only a small area to paint.

I like the idea of adding colour with accessories instead. I want new towels and saw a suggestion of different colours for each person. Plus a few white spares and our navy guest towels. My white towels look terrible in the new bathroom, grubby after six years.

Potential for more work over the next year or two so plenty of opportunity to use Vardo or equivalent. Perhaps a kitchen colour.
