Where should I move to?

I'm going to be moving (within the UK) in the next few months, and I have a few options in mind and am not sure where to go. I'm not suited to the place I'm currently in (ended up here longer than I intended to because of unforeseen circumstances) and don't want to make the same mistake again.

These are the things I'd like:

  • A city;
  • Good university, preferably old and pretty;
  • Beautiful architecture (ideally medieval - Georgian);
  • Not hot in summer;
  • Cosy pubs;
  • Somewhere with interesting history, museums, galleries, interesting things that can't be found elsewhere;
  • Lots of things going on - plays, cinemas, exhibitions, etc., including unusual stuff;
  • Not so small as to be boring, but small enough that you can mostly get around by walking.

Not bothered about:

  • Outdoor pursuits;
  • Schools;
  • Sunshine and hot weather - would actively like to avoid these;
  • How easy it is to drive/park there;
  • Transport links.

Not on the list, as have already lived there and don't want to move back at the moment:

  • Oxford;
  • London.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Carlisle. Uni. Not esp ‘good’ or pretty, but so much other lovely stuff/architecture/history here.

I absolutely love it here.

DEFINTIELY not hot in summer!

Thanks everyone!

I considered Glasgow but I'm not sure - half the people I know who've been/lived there say it's great, and half say it's awful.

Bath and Bristol are lovely - I could happily live in Bristol if it wasn't so far south, which sadly means it's too summery for me!

I've visited Cambridge a few times, and I think it's a bit small, and property is expensive for what you get.

Edinburgh and York are both on the list! I am leaning towards Edinburgh.

I hadn't thought of Carlisle and it looks really beautiful, but sadly the university doesn't offer the MA course I want to do.

Liverpool.

It's a shame Brighton is South as it ticks so many of your boxes.

PhuntSox · 03/04/2018 13:52

Manchester, very good for museums.

ThereIsIron · 03/04/2018 13:55

Belfast

Durham? A fab uni and affordable housing

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/04/2018 13:56

So due to weather, I guess that means ruling out the south of England.

Have you considered Chester or Lancaster? (you could go to Liverpool Uni if you lived in Chester)

letsgetcake · 03/04/2018 13:56

Newcastle is a beautiful city as well

Greenhouseonthehill · 03/04/2018 13:58

Edinburgh

flumpybear · 03/04/2018 14:01

Lancaster? Nottingham? York? Stirling?

Just thinking places that haven't been mentioned - I'd love to live in Edinburgh but loads mentioned already.

welshweasel · 03/04/2018 14:03

Cardiff.

Thank you, some great suggestions here! I think Edinburgh is winning out. Would you recommend it, if you live/have lived there? Any pitfalls to watch out for? I've been several times and loved it, but I know that it can seem very different when you actually live somewhere.
