Both are same size but divided up and laid out differently. Which is better layout do you think and why?

The blue one.
Although I quite like open plan I like better ‘zoning’ than you would get with the red one.

gingergenius · 03/04/2018 09:41

I'd go for the blue one

GuntyMcGee · 03/04/2018 09:49

For me the blue one just tips it.

Although the equal sized rooms of the purple one seem better, the fact that your big patio doors would be coming straight into the lounge puts me off. Also having the lounge next to utility you'd be subject to washing machine noise etc that you'd be less exposed to in the blue one.

The flow of the blue one is better. coming outside onto hard floor/kitchen makes the most sense to me, plus closer to utility.
I'd be tempted to turn the space around though so the seating/dining area were at the window end, rather than the cooking area.

What's your family set up? If you have young kids you might want a free flow between lounge and garden to enable play. Having said that I also much prefer blue, but would like it even better with the kitchen units moved as pp say.

We have a similar layout to blue in terms of room locations. We've just put a conservatory on the back for the kids to play with easy access to the garden if we ever get a summer

Another vote for blue but with kitchen and sofa are swapped. I prefer a kitchen that isn't a thoroughfare.

augustusglupe · 03/04/2018 10:04

The first (blue) is a great layout. I’d say always kitchen at the back, with doors onto the garden.

wowfudge · 03/04/2018 11:27

I prefer the second one with the room equally sized, but I would flip them so the kitchen diner opened out onto the garden rather than the lounge.

foulmouthflora1 · 03/04/2018 14:33

I'd say the blue one for sure. It just looks like a better layout. And I'd prefer the utility to be nearer the kitchen.

Magstermay · 03/04/2018 14:39

Another vote for blue with the kitchen where the family area is, otherwise you’re sitting with your back to the garden and can only see it when you’re physically cooking. Equally if kids running in they’d be coming through the kitchen every time.

MySockIsWetAgain · 03/04/2018 14:42

I love open plan, so I'd take purple and knock the wall between dining and living rooms down, leaving a large arch and one big space.

clothcollector · 03/04/2018 15:05

blue- kitchen /utility doors out to garden is a really useful combination. its nice with the stools to have a cuppa and enjoy the garden views

clothcollector · 03/04/2018 15:10

or blue version but swap kitchen with dining area if plumbing etc permits this.

cheeseandpineapple · 03/04/2018 15:13

Another vote for the blue. I would leave it as is, with kitchen units by the garden side. North West facing back means you should get some evening sun on the west side. If you plan to have summer bbqs easier to move things from kitchen to garden if kitchen is by the garden rather than traipse through seated area.

christmashope · 03/04/2018 15:14

Definitely the blue plans x

Thank you! Really helpful everyone.

Blue.

I wouldn’t buy a house with the red layout.

But the blue layout would need moderating for me. The kitchen is a waste of the garden aspect, can it be swapped into the wider part of the back room, or could the front (lower part on your plan) be the kitchen part and the dividing wall be moved up level with the utility boundary?)
