Help me choose my new home!

I could post links but it might out me! But which would you choose?

  1. a substantial Victorian terraced property (5beds), oodles of charm and character, needs some updating but wonderful spaces (even if it doesn't flow brilliantly). Two bathrooms but no downstairs w/c. Has space to put one in mind. Has big cellar that could be great playroom. Road is okay, a little busy and parking can be tricky.

  2. smaller detached Victorian 'villa' type property (3beds) that is in a very pretty and desirable street. Easy parking. Modernised and extended kitchen/dining thing at rear. Could potentially do the loft one day (most on the street have done this). One bathroom but has downstairs w/c and separate utility.

We have two young DC, so both would be big enough. They are both the same price. Both near to school and our local station.

The second one, just because it sounds like less hassle and easy parking is a big plus (for me anyway.) Fighting for a spot every day would soon take the shine off my new home! What are you going to do with 5 bedrooms anyway?!

Japanesejazz · 02/04/2018 00:27

Lifetime home? If so you will need 4 car parking spaces in the future

MairzyDoats · 02/04/2018 00:28

Still think you should post links though. Grin

Well, we might soon be housing my mum, albeit for a few years..... so an extra bed/living room for her would be a bonus, but no, we don't need that many bedrooms forever. A 4th would however be handy for family/visitors.

Probably 2nd but if you've fallen in love with the first... Logic isn't always best.

Frazzled74 · 02/04/2018 00:31

I would go for 1, extra bedrooms will be great for future children/ guests/dcs Friends/ foreign exchanges plus you always have options in the future if needed, (letting a room,Airbnb, office, playroom). Are there any differences in gardens that may effect your choice?

PickAChew · 02/04/2018 00:31

Hi for whichever yican see yourselves in for the long term. If you crave the space of property 1, only take it on if you can easily do or pay for the work it inevitably needs.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 02/04/2018 00:32

Easily no. 2. Detached, downstairs loo and utility, parking, quieter road, nice area. If it's big enough, then that would be my choice.

PinkAvocado · 02/04/2018 00:32

The second. In my own experience, lack of parking is more stressful than you think it may be. Decent parking is now a non negotiable!

TheVeryHungryDieter · 02/04/2018 00:33

The detached one. I've recently moved to a detached house after having my neighbours too close for comfort, especially as we were the first people on the block to have children for quite some time.

It's proved to be a huge mental load off to not worry about noise, or builders, or children having nightmares or moving furniture around.

Also easy parking is a huge bonus.

egdehsdrawkcab · 02/04/2018 00:36

I will link to similar properties....

The first one is akin to this but needs some updating - esp to kitchens and bathrooms. Also, no bath in loft. And road is busier.

Second is more like this:

Except both are the same price. House 2 is definitely a better location. But both are in same postcode

Sorry I missed the detached part, I think I would go for no 2 as neighbours in a terrace can be a nightmare and you have no control over who lives in such close proximity.

grandplans · 02/04/2018 00:45

First one! More space and you obviously love it.

DairyisClosed · 02/04/2018 00:50

Square footage?

egdehsdrawkcab · 02/04/2018 00:51

1900 vs 1200

  1. Oodles of charm soon gets pretty old if you spend 15 minutes looking for somewhere to park every evening.
egdehsdrawkcab · 02/04/2018 00:52

But ceiling height in loft rooms of the big one are rather compromised

egdehsdrawkcab · 02/04/2018 00:53

You are all pretty convincing - parking Hmm

grandplans · 02/04/2018 01:01

Have you done a second visit? That really helped me make my mind up.

egdehsdrawkcab · 02/04/2018 01:05

Yep, on both!! It's a bit of a head/heart thing..... but the parking......

OP posts:
grandplans · 02/04/2018 01:22

How bad is the parking exactly?

howcomes · 02/04/2018 03:17

I would chose the detached every single time, having that extra space between neighbours makes all the difference! Parking and location are huge pluses too, especially since it sounds as though there is potential to create additional space in the attic.

turnipfarmers · 02/04/2018 03:41

Detached over a terrace anytime.

VanGoghsLeftEar · 02/04/2018 05:05

I love the second one. Quieter, more parking, more what I'd like.

trixymalixy · 02/04/2018 06:00

2 without a doubt.

A friend of mine spent over £1m on a beautiful terraced Victorian house. She can never get parked anywhere near her house. That would drive me mad. All that money and I’d want somewhere to park.
