What’s Edgeley/Stockport like?

Hi everyone,

My other half and I are looking to buy our first home in Manchester and we are exploring a few affordable places which we quite like the feel of. We fell in love with Cheadle Village and loved how we had the shops and cafes on our doorstep, but the houses were going way over what we could afford (offers over and upwards of £20K over) and so we decided that cast our net out a little further and started to look at a Cheadle Heath and Edgeley. We found Cheadle Heath to be a bit far from the nicer areas and thought Edgeley was a better option.

While we’ve visited Edgeley on a few occasions, I wondered if anyone who currently lives there could share their experience? I’ve noticed on Instagram a few FTBers are moving into the area which I take as a good sign as they seem to be renovating their houses.

Ideally we want to move somewhere with amenities and things to do on our doorstep and I know Castle Street isn’t exactly Cheadle Village, but does anyone think there’s any sign of it improving? I know a vegan beauty salon has opened which I think is a good sign and if there’s an influx of FTBers, maybe cafes and independent shops will follow suit? I think Stockport town centre isn’t too far of a walk from Edgeley and it seems to have good transport links into Manchester which is vital for us and our jobs.

We have mainly been looking south of Alexandra Park and the reservoir as I’ve heard this is the nicer part of Edgeley. We are aware of the flight path but it doesn’t bother us too much from what we can see (as long as it isn’t too loud at night!).

Coming from a less desirable area of Manchester where we have been renting for several years, we are looking to move to a safe area, that’s on the up and will be a good investment with a real community feel.

We did look in Urmston, Prestwich and Heaton Chapel but the prices have increased dramatically over the past few months and we just can’t seem to get our foot in the door without it costing us way over what we could realistically afford!

And as we are first time buyers, we want it to be a good investment where we can add value to our home in the next few years.

So for anyone living in Edgeley or knows of it, please share your experience with me! Thank you Smile

Reservoir side of Edgeley and ‘new india’ streets are indeed lovely. Think the small ‘town’ centre is up and coming. Decent transport links I believe and walkable at a push to stockport station. Some beautiful houses by the reservoir.
Flight path noise is pretty noticeable.
Stay well away from Hollywood Park area

Mil lived near the football ground. Major parking problems and you needed a permit. Lovely house though, big cellars.

I have friends who live there and we used to live a walk away. It's a nice area - good transport links. There are some lovely houses too.

Hi

I’d love to know where you ended up? We will be in the same situation (hopefully) by April 2019 and looking at the more affordable areas of Stockport ... I.e edgeley, reddish , Cale green?

X

Hello! We bought in Edgeley 😊 We moved over the summer and love it! We’ve been renovating our house so haven’t been living full time but it’s amazing to see how many new people are moving to the area. I particularly like the community feel, parks and how it is SO easy to get into Manchester and Stockport - there’s lots of new restaurants opening up so that’s been fun. And it’s weird to say but we barely notice the planes! Good luck with your search! Have you found many places of interest?

Hi! Thanks for getting back to me so promptly.

Happy New Year!

We’re very much in saving mode still but are aiming for April. We had a little drive around earlier... all the terraces that we’ve seen on right move look really cute and I like the cobbled streets! We also really like it around Stockport market area.

I can see parking is a bit of a nightmare 🙈 would you say it’s an easy enough walk to the station for the commute into town?

Happy New Year!

Yes I love the market area too. There are quite a few independent shops and bars opening up in that area so it’s nice to see. There’s also a Foodie Friday and Makers Market there too. I also believe the market hall is being turned into a big food market like the one in Altrincham - haven’t heard any recent news but seems quite good.

As for parking in Edgeley, you’ll see a lot of cars parked outside however down our street there is an unspoken rule that people park outside their own home. If we have visitors they park across the way or down the street. Also down some roads you’ll see permits are needed - these are free from the tourism office and used mainly on match days. However we’ve never noticed a problem with match day!

In terms of getting to town I would say it’s an easy walk. Most people cut through Castle Street and then at the end there’s the entrance to the train station. Then it’s about a 10ish minute journey into town. When we drive into Manchester it’s easy to get onto the M60 too.

Let me know if you have any other questions and happy house hunting - and saving! 😊

Great to hear it worked out for you. For anyone looking to get a foot in Stockport at reasonable prices, ou could look at heaton chapel, south reddish but no further north than houdsworth square in my opinion..

Maybe I am going to move to this area, so I end up here to read about Edgely.
I read a comment saying to stay away from hollywook park. Can anyone explain why?

BlackBucketOfCheese · 26/06/2020 15:07

@immdu there is a lot of ASB down that end of Edgeley.

There is a decent Edgeley Facebook group that has loads of info.

We moved to Edgeley from Ancoats. The crime in Ancoats was getting out of control and we also wanted a more family friendly, less transient community.
I cannot rate Edgeley enough. First and foremost there is a real community spirit which we never had in Ancoats.
some of the youth can be unruly but as house prices increase those types will hopefully be pushed out of the area.

We moved to the West part of Edgeley. When researching we kept reading that the Reservoir area was better - this is complete nonsense. Maybe it was years ago but not now for sure. Lots of FTB moving to the area which is always refreshing. I suspect when the new development is completed Edgeley is only going to become more desirable. Castle street needs tackling though, with the gentrification that’s happening right now, this street needs to adapt to offer more ‘nicer’ options. Move here now why it’s still affordable, otherwise you’ll find yourself priced out given it’s an up and coming hotspot.

Edgeley is a wonderful area - with beautiful Victorian terraces - the area reminds me of Balham in London. We have recently moved here from central Manchester - there is an active community, with very friendly residents who are actively involved in enhancing the community. So you can say, it's up and coming due to the nature of first-time buyers. Location wise - it's perfect, 10-minute walk to the train station that will take you to London or Manchester - 15 minutes walk into the town centre.
The bonus here is that the new West Town development with its new bars and restaurants will be a ten-minute walk away. Sits near Junction 1 of the M60. Close to Cheadle, Heatons and Didsbury. So if you fancy going out somewhere different, it's a cheap and short cab ride away.

The area is also really, really quiet. The only sound you hear are the aircrafts that fly over to the airport, mainly landing so the noise isn't too loud. I personally find it rather soothing.

I would say but now, before the house prices start to get too high - given The Time update on Stockport, this is really going to drive more interest.
