Industrial looking island extractor hood

Hello all, I’m currently planning a kitchen renovation in Yorkshire which will hopefully include an island housing a range cooker/oven. In order to minanise smells and condensation from cooking I have read that an extractor hood which is vented externally via ducting is much more effective than the recirculating type. I quite like the look of industrial looking kitchens where extractor ducting is visible (ie runs below kitchen ceiling rather than in between kitchen ceiling and upstairs floorboards). I’ve seen this on a couple of DIY/renovation programmes recently and think it looks fab but cannot find anywhere that sells/installs such systems in the U.K. all extractor units I have seen look very modern and are designed for the ducting to be hidden by housing or the ceiling. Does anyone have an aesthetically pleasing industrial looking extraction system in their kitchen? Please get in touch!! I’m fact even a nice industrial looking extractor hood with hidden ducting would be fine at this point! I can’t belive how difficult they are to find with industrial looking kitchens making a come-back!
Many thanks

Have a look at the Elica Pro Anglo

pro kitchen ones are dearer than you might think

I knew a company that made them for commercial kitchens, they seemed to measure up and make to order from galvanised or stainless steel sheet folded and welded.

The extractor duct is a large rolled tube, not the small flexible or plastic pipe used in domestic kitchens. However you could make up your duct from 150mm plastic pipe with elbows and angles, as used for sewage. You could spray it silver for an industrial look. The flexible plastic domestic hoses are not much good.

Used catering equipment is always on the market, greatly reduced from the new price, because most new restaurants seem to go bust. I'd suggest stainless steel because it is so easy to keep clean, and doesn't rust. If you do take the second-hand route you could blast is with a pressure washer and detergent.

If you can get hold of a canopy and ducting, there are extraction suction units that can go on the outside of the building (I believe this is because big ones are noisy)

A domestic canopy might have an extract rate in the region of 250 cu.m/hr at high speed, as a guide. You can get extraction units to build into your own canopy from makers like Elica who I think are good, (their website is awful but they will send you their glossy brochure if you ask). Look for the dimensioned drawings on the web pages.

Try www.justfans.co.uk

Seconded justfans, they actually custom fabricate the parts for you if necessary. The quality is excellent.

In my case I wanted a decent recirculation hood suitable for frying under, and all the feedback was they are useless of the shelf, better for decoration than function.
So I bought a custom made plenum the size of the bottom of a kitchen wall cupboard from them, inserted a commercial grease filter and a giant electronic controlled fan run on slow speed.
Cost was probably at the higher end but that was mostly the fan.

Maximum rate is over 1000m3 per hour but even on a much lower rate, it clears the grease well from the cooking area. I inspected the inside after heavy frying and it's still clean, as is the ceiling by the discharge.

PS it doesn't look industrial, just looks like a standard kitchen wall cupboard.
