Experiences of tile paint

I want to use this in my kitchen to save removing the old tiles but someone told me it is dangerous round cookers/hobs

I really hope it's not because I painted all the tiles in my kitchen last month, including around the hob etc. I didn't do any cooking for 24 hours and haven't had any problems. It does stink though so do it on a day when you can have all the windows and doors open.
I went dark grey to white so needed 2 coats. They look pretty good.

Thanks for the advice I think leaving it a day or 2 to dry is a good idea. Which paint did you use?

It's okay for the first few weeks but then peels off. Even the expensive brands.

It kind of bubbles and then unsticks.

Better to cover then in good quality sign maker's vinyl. You buy it in rolls.

Cakeandmarshmallows · 29/03/2018 12:34

Following with interest as thinking about painting our kitchen tiles, can't afford re tiling. Is this sign makers vinyl better than tile paint, which I have only seen limited colours in better? Can anyone tell me more about this please? Newbie at diy! And will need to explain it to husband who is even more of a newbie to it!

TheQueenOfWands · 29/03/2018 12:39

I bought my vinyl on eBay from a signmaker materials bloke.

Just type in 'matt adhesive vinyl'. Plenty of colours to chose from (although I had white for the tiles and grey for insides of drawers).

I bought a 20m roll for about £20 which did my medium kitchen. Then use clear silicon where it meets the worktops.

Tile paint looks good when you first put it on but you can't really wash/clean it. We have tile paint at work along with some excellent cleaning staff and it hasn't lasted. There's big patches missing.

I used ronseal tile paint (I think) and haven't had any problems yet, but know it's early days.

I used it on our bathroom tiles as a cheap and cheerful fix. Looked good initially, although the smell was really strong. Then it started to peel, especially where it was in contact with water, like round the washbasin. Looked dreadful eventually, but fortunately we have since had the bathroom done up. I don't recommend it.

We had a firm come in and spray our whole kitchen, cupboard doors/worktops and tiles. All been fine, you have to be careful with any standing water though, a bit on one tile bubbled where the washing up sponge tray sat

Blankscreen · 29/03/2018 19:14

I found it shit.

I painted our kitxhen tiles and it all just bubbled and Deeled off where it was in contact with anything. Eg where I wiped etc.

Don't waste your time

Just throwing it out there. When my sister moved into her new house she hated the patterned tiles so much that she painted them until she got round to re-doing the kitchen. She read somewhere to use radiator paint. I was really sceptical but in fairness, as it was solvent based, the finish looked amazing for a brushed paint. It was a year later before she removed the tiles and still looked good. Limited range of colours though and she kept giggling and calling me Auntie for a few hours after as the fumes were so powerful. If you try it, best leave a window open.

I painted out kitchen tiles two years ago - it's stayed in place just fine! The only bit that peeled was on the windowsill under a plant pot. I used Rustoleum tile paint, after finding a recommendation for it on here - you can buy if on Amazon.

PunjanaTea · 30/03/2018 18:45

@thequeenofwands did you stick it over individual tiles or over the grout as well? Do you think this would work in a bathroom?

LOVELYDOVEY05 · 04/04/2018 12:24

I went into Robert Dyas store who said tile paint is ok provided you put a base coat under it first (they do not sell either by the way)

I used it on fireplace tiles and it's perfect five years on. They don't get wet though so that might make a big difference.
