Hi,
We moved house a month ago and need to sort a new boiler. Current one is about 20 years old and temperamental.
Have had 3 quotes but am unsure and indecisive. House is 3 bed semi detached, 1 main bathroom, me DH and one child. Also looking to get radiator installed in kitchen.

Quote 1 - British Gas
£3612 inc vat for Worcester Bosch 533 compact ErP, some kind of treatment and 'power flush', Hive, not including a new radiator.
Quote 2 - Local company
£2450 plus vat for 29kw veissman combi boiler, new radiator in kitchen, Hive
Quote 3 - Local independent guy
£2500 no vat (Not vat registered) for 35kw Ideal logic combi boiler, new radiator in kitchen, Hive.
Part of British gas quote is scaffolding and building work as they say the flue needs moved, neither other person said that.
Would really welcome any thoughts on the above boilers and quotes, don't want to get ripped off but want to make sure we get a decent boiler.
Thanks!

Look up reviews for the Ideal Logic Combi and the Veissman Combi boilers and go back to Quote 2 to ask why they recommend a 29kw boiler as opposed to a 35kw?

Alwayscheerful · 29/03/2018 12:38

What make of boiler is currently installed? using same make might make the flue cheaper.
Worcester Bosch boilers are very reliable and often come with 5 year + guarantee if you use a recommended installer.

PigletJohn · 29/03/2018 12:47

Ignore the BG quote because it is pretty sure to be overpriced. If you like big companies, see if your Electricity supplier installs CH (SSE do)

Did all the quotes include a powerflush and a system filter?

Is there currently a hot-water cylinder? What colour?

Viessmann boilers are very satisfactory (stainless steel heat exchanger) and have a long guarantee if fitted by an Approved Installer (check on Find An Installer

PigletJohn · 29/03/2018 13:13

found it

the Viessmann standard guarantee is 5 years, extendable to 10 years if fitted by an approved installer. it may vary depending on product.

I asked my plumber- who had quoted me for a different brand- to fit a WB boiler. It was a few hundred quid more but it is great! I got quoted £5.5k by British Gas Shock but that also included extensive scaffolding

gingerbubs · 31/03/2018 09:03

Thanks all!
Current boiler is a vokera linea combi boiler, so no water tank (that I am aware of).
I think quotes included flush and filter but will check - it was my husband who was in when they came to give quotes but he knows as little as me.
I think we have decided to go with the ideal boiler. My understanding is they used to not be great but in recent years have a much better reputation. We had one in our previous house (new build) and no problems. It does come with a 7 year guarantee. Am not committed yet though so if anyone has had bad recent experiences with ideal boilers I would be glad to hear them!
Thanks

Would always recommend Worceste r

gingerbubs · 31/03/2018 09:45

Thanks, I have heard this a lot so am doubting our thoughts of going for the Ideal one. Might get a couple of quotes from other Worcester approved installers.

We had the Ideal fitted. Our (trusted) plumber recommended it and we read up on it loads. Reputation is very good now.

We are in a 3 bed semi, one bathroom.

We also got Hive installed at the same time and we're very happy with everything.

IrregularCommentary · 31/03/2018 09:53

This is just one review, but it pretty much sums up our research

British Gas has a bit of a name for being overpriced. Have a look on check a trade and you might find some reviews of local heating engineers. Bosch is quite popular as is Valiant.

Heartshapedfairylights · 31/03/2018 10:04

Always go for a Worcester. My DH is a gas engineer/fitter. No end of problems with Ideal. He says Viessmann isn’t too good either. Get a quote from an independent fitter accredited on the WB website.
However, he doesn’t think the BG price incl vat and scaffolding seems that bad.
You should also get a Worcester Wave. Hubby rips out Hive all the time and says they are rubbish.

LIZS · 31/03/2018 10:06

Watching with interest as also likely to be replacing soon - Potterton Prima boiler ,11 radiators , green hotwater cylinder. Would like it to have capacity potentially to extend heating into loft space. BG apparently offering a discount for existing customers.

GreenTulips · 31/03/2018 10:09

We were also recommended the Worcester boilers

Same boiler x 3 quotes £2.5K £2.9K and £3.5allt he same boiler

Have to say it's made a big difference to how warm we are

Oblomov18 · 31/03/2018 10:22

Very interesting. Linked Review says there's not much in it, and both are good.

PigletJohn · 31/03/2018 11:36

gasmen constantly argue about which is the best and which boiler is rubbish.

they often don't believe the large-scale consumer surveys which include reliability and satisfaction surveys from hundreds of thousands of homeowners. As far as I can make out, Vaillant, Viessmann and Worcester-Bosch have the most satisfied customers.

The quality of the installation makes a huge difference. A dirty or leaky old system can be expected to give trouble that the boiler guarantee won't cover, hence powerflushing an old system and fitting a filter are very worthwhile. A thorough powerflush should be expected to take about half a day.

gingerbubs · 31/03/2018 12:09

Thanks all, especially PigletJohn - feel a bit star struck that you replied as I have noticed so much of your helpful advice on here over the years 😆
