Glyn school catchment - Epsom - Help!

Please can anyone help settle an argument I'm currently having with my other half in regards to the catchment and admissions for Gyln secondary in Epsom..

Basically we are looking to buy a property in the area and although our son is only due to start reception next year we would rather not have to move again for secondary school application. So having said that we are keen to be within a mile's distance of Gyln so that he could have good chance of going there in future....this isn't that easy on our budget but doable.

Ok so the argument I'm having is that it doesn't matter if another school is closer (for example, Blenheim)as the school just looks at distance not nearest school but my OH just will not believe me! Grrrrrr

Please can anyone jump in and settle this?

You're right.

If you meet the admissions criteria and you list Glyn as your choice number 1, then that's the school you're get.

Last years admission citeria in rank order with amount of places allocated to that citeria.

  1. LAC & PLAC. 2. Exceptional social/medical need. 3. Siblings at time of application. 4. Children of staff employed to work at Glyn School, where the parent has a permanent contract of employment with Glyn School or GLF Schools and whose normal base of work is Glyn School. The employment contract must have been in place for two or more years at the time of application. Staff that are recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a particular skill shortage can also apply under this category. 5. Distance of a student’s permanent residence from the school.
Criterion 1 = 1, Criterion 2 = 2, Criterion 3 = 64, Criterion 4 = 0, Criterion 5 = 173, Distance = 2.264km Offered 240

Distance of last pupil admitted after other citeria filled places as below.

Year Distance Kilometres
July 2010 2.12
July 2011 2.60
July 2012 2.64
July 2013 3.33
July 2014 2.70
July 2015 2.56
July 2016 2.49
July 2017 2.27
September 2017 2.40

Wish it worked this way in my area my school catchment is for a school 2 miles away. Whilst the best school in the city is half a mile away.

Squirrel- no catchments in the Glyn area, just admission areas.

OP, just one other thing I thought about it that you might like to be a bit closer than the current distance in case things change in the next few years (new houses built, lots of siblings in your year group etc). And if buying within a mile, make sure you don't end up in the borough of Sutton by accident - could only happen if you were moving NE of the school.

I live locally to Glyn and Blenheim although I’m closer to Blenheim.

Several boys who live in the same road as me go to Glyn. I know of one boy who practically lived next door to Blenheim and he went to Glyn.

HTH.

Does it matter which borough you’re on? I know London and Surrey schools have an equal preference system, you are able to apply to any school regardless of which council area it’s actually in. The admission criteria does not mention boroughs so I think it must be purely on distance.

JoJoSM2 · 27/03/2018 22:31

Secondary, you're right. It actually wouldn't matter where the house is as long as it's close enough.

Thanks for all your replies, always nice to be right haha he'll never hear the end of it now!

Yes we are being wary of potentially shrinking catchments so have been looking for anything less than a mile. The house that we were having an argument over was 0.5miles to blenheim and like 0.58miles to Glyn!

Thanks for your inputs, makes me feel a bit assured now.

Sorry to revive, does anyone with dc in BOTH rosebery and glyn know what the catchment will be likely in coming years?

JoJoSM2 · 21/09/2019 12:07

Fancydaisy, have a look at the Surrey ‘starting secondary’ booklet. It’ll tell you the distances for the past 3 years. You should be able to work out if there’s anywhere close enough to both.
