Two front doors??

New builds just gone up relatively local to me. Strangely they have a front door immediatley next to a full glass door which leads into the kitchen.

Is this a "thing" or is it odd??

I've seen this in 1950s terraced houses. The kitchen door is sort of creating a passageway to the back garden . They've always been through a store or utility area and not the 'clean' route through the house. So it might be like the informal door that some houses have. Tradesman's entrance, family entrance, not for posh guests.

FunnyBird · 26/03/2018 21:34

Bit weird if you still have to go through the lounge to get out the back though

SavoyCabbage · 26/03/2018 21:40

They are determined people are going to be outside.

Doors
Sheds
Communal gardens
Barbecue pit
Balcony

SecondaryConfusion · 26/03/2018 21:41

It looks a bit odd. Maybe the builder had some discounted doors and it was cheaper than brickwork plus window?

user1484830599 · 26/03/2018 21:44

Is it something to do with building regulations? Houses must have X amount of exits or something like that?

chickywoo · 26/03/2018 21:48

Maybe there is some building regs (I don’t know just making it up!) that say you’ve got to have two doors on a house and because there’s no where to put it at the back they’re both at front! If you look At floor plan though one goes into hallway one into kitchen,
Maybe its the door you use to put your bin out!!

Strawberry2017 · 26/03/2018 21:52

Seems ridiculous to me x

NapQueen · 26/03/2018 21:57

A friend of ours has her kitchen at the front yet she gets a sensible window. Only access to the back is patio doors in the lounge.

So so odd. Think thats the bin store at the front so bin out the kitchen dooe but not worth losing that wall for dining to avoid bin bag going through the hallway.

My house has two front doors. They are on opposite sides of the front though. One leads to the porch/living room, the other is a direct hallway to the back.

Being a mid terrace it makes sense for us, but all the houses have that layout regards.

We've sold it now though Grin

JoJoSM2 · 27/03/2018 08:05

I imagine it's sth to do with either building regs or budgets. The kitchen needs a big window and perhaps it was cheaper to put that door in rather than a full- height window?

Other than that, I actually like the house. The facade is cool and the layout and having a utility + loo downstairs is really good.

catbasilio · 27/03/2018 10:31

I also find the kitchen door weird, but other than that the layout is great and the kitchen door is not a problem.

NapQueen · 27/03/2018 10:52

I suppose it would be handy for bringing in the shoppibg.

Are they thinking you might sit out on the front terrace to eat in the summer, and the door makes that easier more appealing? Though clearly that depends on what the outlook to the front is.

Viviene · 27/03/2018 16:28

Can you change it for a window?

Wow Worried, very crafty! At least the internal sq footage is very decent for a 3-bed terrace.

MacaroniPenguin · 27/03/2018 22:45

Isn't it just to get max light into the kitchen, as there is no other natural light and it's a long thin room?

MacaroniPenguin · 27/03/2018 22:53

worried that makes sense and is a tad depressing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/03/2018 23:12

I've seen it in houses a dd looked at before buying. All ex LA. Though since they all had gardens and were mostly terraced, they must have had a 2nd back door, too.
Some of them - all 1950s build so well pre any central heating - had a large store room just inside formerly for coal - maybe the front 'back' door was for the coal man?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/03/2018 23:19

Should add, quite a few houses like those I mentioned have been done up - owners have knocked through to the 'coal hole' to make a considerably bigger kitchen, so the original purpose won't be obvious.

EleanorRobinson · 28/03/2018 08:57

I don’t know why they’ve done this in this instance (and I agree the front of the house is quite attractive), but I can tell you it will be a total pain not having a window to open in the kitchen. Sometimes you just want to let out a bit of smoke or steam without the cat or the baby disappearing outside too.
And just as you wouldn’t leave your front door open and unattended (assuming normal, urban / semi-urban environment), you won’t be able to leave this one open either.

eloisesparkle · 02/04/2018 14:33

Perhaps the door can also be used as a window. We had a door / window in a house we lived in.
