House buying-when in the process to start packing?

We are buying a house. Mortgage is in place, and solictor has been instructed two weeks ago.

Buyers are buying a propert with no oneard chain.

So, when should I start packing?! No dates are in place, so is it too soon?
First time buyer, so don't know what's the norm.

That's meant to say buyers are buying a property with no onward chain

I think about 12 weeks is common but it can take much longer so I'd say you'd be on the early side.

If you are planning to get professional removers in, I would strongly recommend getting them to quote for packing. The best £2-300 you will ever spend, over not just the house move but life in general. Saves weeks of faffing about and stress.

OTOH if you are more "man with a van" or "hire your own van" type movers, hopefully you don't have weeks' worth of packing to do.

maybe not time to start packing, but definitely time to have a clear-out, get rid of anything you haven't used in the past year is a good place to start.

You could start packing up any time. Winter clothing, excess of stuff (books you wont read, extra bedlinens, etc) if you wanted.

If you are paying for packers then dont pack a thing.

BothersomeCrow · 26/03/2018 12:12

Start sorting stuff you won't need in the next few months, and decluttering as much as possible, and pack those items away. Then get quotes for movers to pack.

Strange question 😂

If you live like a backpacker now, 10 minutes before you get the keys. If you live like someone who a documentary could be made about, it’s never too early to start. Somewhere in the middle, start packing away things you don’t use on a day to day basis 😊

I prefer to do the packing myself. Too many idiots out there packing things like onions in with other stuff that might not be unpacked for a while, the TV remote in a box with kids toys, kitchen utensils in with glasses

As for £200-£300.? More like £2000-£3000.

Tell us about your new house 😊. Is it all lovely and ready to live in or a do-er upper. Or ok for now but we need to update as we can?

As for £200-£300.? More like £2000-£3000.

Seriously? We've only ever had one person come for one day and do the lot. £2k for that would be ridiculous.

Macaroni. Where I live (SE) all my friends have paid £2-3000 for their standard 3 bed, moved locally & friends with bigger houses have paid more. One friend moving from a minimalist studio flat paid £1200. I had two pieces of furniture moved about 6 months ago and it cost me £250.

MacaroniPenguin · 26/03/2018 13:43

Aha, I was quoting the price for packing over and above the cost of removals.

Removals with full packing (but no unpacking) cost £250ish more than just the removals, and us doing our own packing. Removals are a big van and several people for a day, whereas packing is just one bloke doing a short day's work the day before.

Not until you’ve exchanged (voice of bitter experience Wink)

I think we paid an extra £400 for a full packing service. We moved from a 3 bed house with cellars where there was an office full of stuff, a storeroom and a huge garage. Packing took them 2 days. Worth every penny. We moved a few years earlier and I did all the packing. Never again!

It is good to start sorting rooms, deciding if there is anything that can go to charity or recycling tip. Then if you allow roughly a day a room, give or take a day. Then plus a couple of days for contingency/final clean.

ihavetogoshoppingnow · 26/03/2018 20:07

I packed really early (10 weeks before we moved Blush ) because I had annual leave to use up so everything that wasn’t a necessity was packed, decor, pictures, candles, cushions, kitchen and baking stuff that I didnt use often, the fancy glasses, spare plates, out of season clothing, I also threw away loads of crap
