Doesn’t anyone else just end up falling out with their builders/tradespeople all the time?

It’s so infuriating 😩

My partner is pretty bullish when things end up going wrong and so of course we eventually fall out. We had our kitchen done recently. Because there have been loads of problems everyone has ended up tense and even though we previously had a great relationship with this set of builders it’s apparent now that they are thoroughly pissed off and once this job has finished thetvwant nothing to do with us.

I am the other end of the spectrum where I’m too nice and get taken for a mug. So actually I’m pleased my DP sets the bar high but of course this isn’t working either 🤦🏻‍♀️

Is this par for the course do you think when it comes to big building projects (bathroom/kitchen renovations) or should I be muzzling DP and trying to get stuff done myself.

God I wish I could. I’m upstairs right now with my face burning with embarrassment.

Compromise is the key , I've never fallen out with contractors , on all sorts of jobs things will go wrong. Stuff gets uncovered that you or the builder didn't plan for. I think your DH needs reining in. Although if he is the type of person that will have an argument in an empty room easier said than done.

i have had issues with builders/trades people - they dont like the paying customer telling them they've fitted something off centre or have cut something a few mm too short, leaving a gap etc

ive had some trades who are very good indeed but the "do the bare minimum to get by" ones basically trades get angry if you call them out on their half arsed work.

The key thing here is interaction. It sounds as though you could improve things by doing a bit more in writing rather than talking. This will also protect you if things go wrong.

What sort of things are going wrong? Anything to do with money is best written down.

nope, I have very good builder whom I trust
I've used his services for the last 10 years or so and am very grateful for having his help and advice

Replying from the other side I can't say I've ever fallen out with a client, although I've struggled to bite my tongue a few times! I have however walked away from potential jobs when the client comes across as overly difficult (if they are that hard to deal with before you've even started, they won't get any better!). High standards are fine but some people are just bloody awkward!

I occasionally have to stop DH saying something in too blunt a manner which will create carnage, but I've spent the last couple of years treating my tradesmen like royalty and paying invoices as soon as they arrive. In return, I get shuffled up to the top of their job lists whenever I have anything that needs doing and often don't get charged at all if it's something small and they know they've got a bigger job coming up for me.
