Kitchen dilemma

Hi everyone
I wonder if any of you could help. We have just completed our extension and now are in the process of designing our kitchen. The dimensions are 7m long by 4m wide.

The designer says it’s too small for an island but I wondered what your thoughts were of his design? I will attach it so you can have a look

With a peninsula? I really like it. We also don't have room for an island, and we're doing something similar.

Humptynumpty02 · 22/03/2018 18:41

You're designer is talking cobblers, our designed kitchen is 5m x 4m and we have a fairly large island going to be installed. Ours was designed by our very own OnePlan.

JoJoSM2 · 22/03/2018 18:52

Doesn't be look like 4x7m as your design looks squarer than that. If you've got 5 kiddies, don't you want to ditch the peninsula to have space for a big table? 2 bar stools don't sound realistic for a big family.

I also don't like that there's nowhere to put stuff coming out of the fridge.

With regards to fitting an island, you need at least about 1m all the way round it (and lots more with bar stools or if dishwasher is opposite hob etc).

Silly designer only put the kitchen side of the room on the design, the other side will have a large dining table

Use the whole of the 7x4 m for the kitchen. Have the table integrated into the kitchen. Big family = big kitchen!

Cornishmumofone · 22/03/2018 19:56

That's a similar design to my kitchen diner... but I wish I had more of a breakfast bar as there's nowhere for your legs to go when sitting at the peninsula.

JoJoSM2 · 22/03/2018 23:43

I think the only way to fit in an island would be to have it parallel to the sink. You would need to move the fridge to be on the same wall as the sink - 4 m is wide enough for 1 set of units + island.
The second photo shows 1 run of units + island in a room that's about 3.5-4m wide.

4m isn't wide enough for units on both sides and an island in the middle unless its super skinny. I've attached a photo so you can see if a skinny island is sth you'd like. You could have it going down the middle and only lose the peninsula to accommodate it.

That door is in an awkward spot. Having the tall units opposite the peninsula really limits the size of the peninsula and mean anyone getting stuff out of the fridge is slap bang in the middle of the pinch point/walkway.

Does the kitchen definitely have to go that end?

Mumof5kiddies · 24/03/2018 08:27

Yes unfortunately as we have the doors leading to the garden on the other side. The drawing hasn't been measured to scale and so when my hubby and I went into the extension the peninsular was 2.2m, which is more then half the kitchen width. I was thinking 1.8m would be better with an overhang what do you think?

I think our kitchen part of our extension is 5.1m wide by about the same. We have a gorgeous island. I would definitely get some to scale plans drawn up

PigletJohn · 24/03/2018 12:27

An island does take up a lot of room, because you expect to easily walk all round it, so you need a metre of space all round. If your kitchen is 4 metres wide, that means a 2 metre island, but if you have units on one of the walls, on;y about 1400mm wide.

Units on both sides and it is tiny

I quite like a peninsula, it gives you a good U-shaped kitchen with work surfaces and units all around you, and separation from the living end.

I have seen a kitchen with (what looked like) a 2-metre unit against the wall, which rolled out into the room on industrial rubber wheels as an island (or peninsula) prep table, with access to stores and equipment on all sides. No plumbing though.

Mine is similar size
Thinking about this layout

Veuveo, isn't yours at least 4.7-5m wide?

veuveo · 24/03/2018 14:35

This isn't mine, I'm thinking of a similar layout with units on either side and an island and the dining table at the end. This is 4.4m according to Rightmove!

I'm thinking 60cm deep units, 80cm space either side, that's still a 1.2m wide island.
Think it's doable?

JoJoSM2 · 24/03/2018 14:54

I suppose if that's 4.4 then the island is probably skinnier than I thought - probably a 1m island and 1.1m space on either side.

I don't think 80cm will cut it. I've got 90cm on one side and it's ok as it's just drawers so they don't stick out very much. If you've got an oven or dishwasher or cupboards that you need to bend for, I'd aim for 1.1m. If you want 2 people in the kitchen then 1.2m is advisable to be able to go past each other.

You might want to go to showrooms or even just B&Q with a tape measure to get a feel for different distances. I know we found that really useful - went with DH and tried to open drawers cupboards etc while in between islands and other units.

veuveo · 24/03/2018 15:17

I'm hoping we can knock a chimney breast down to make a bit more space. There's an island there already so I'll be able to figure out the space around it. Haven't moved in yet!

What about this one?
