Hallo all, I need a little advice. We have just made an offer on a non-renovated Victorian cottage (1892), we always knew it would be a "project" but the building inspection came back today with the news that there is LOTS of asbestos! In the eaves, the walls of the extension and the cladding! what do we do now?!

A fiend of mine asked for a big discount in similar circumstances and got it, should we do the same? and how much? I don't know what to do and fear we are biting more than we can chew!! help wise mumsnetters!

Ah I see! Now I know about the various things it's in I'm a bit hyper aware, and over interested Smile

I think just ask for a discount which would cover the cost of professional removal as and when you needed it removed. Like others have said, it's best left where it is if you can. There's no need to reduce the offer to the value of the land.

Had some results back on Artex testing, it isn't Artex, someone really did just woodchip paper the ceiling Hmm

It's getting more awkward, the vendor is being difficult about us having asbestos removal people going in for a quote, so we might just have to get a general quote based on square meters rather than a specific one to the property, I think they have an idea we might want to ask for a discount, and it is their property, they don't have to let us in!

Plus, the asbestos removal company said that actually the cladding, if it is deteriorating, and it is, is classed as unsafe, while the eaves etc. could stay in place for now, if undisturbed

so now I am thinking to just get a quote for cladding removal and ask for a discount of that amount, I think that would be fair?

hi all, I thought I would update as you were all so helpful! so we ended up getting a quote from an asbestos removal company, it wasn't that pricey actually.

But during the inspection the guy found out the walls underneath the cladding were very, very damaged and probably the cladding had been put on to cover cracks in the exterior walls, this, coupled with findings from the inspection (movement detected in rooms, and a metal rod in one of the bedrooms) made us worry about structural problems, so we withdrew the offer

Spent a fortune on survey etc. and I am heartbroken because I loved the property, on the other hand, we may have dodged a bullet! Thanks again for your help!

Rula Thanks! yes, the survey probably saved us from a money pit property! I should think of it as money saved, not spent! and thanks for the encouragement, I hope you are right! Smile

I know someone who had to remove several ceilings. It cost 8k and they had to move out of their home for several days.
