Anyone got wooden floors with UFH?

I love the look of real wood floors but also want underfloor heating in our kitchen-diner. I know you can have engineered wood and UFH but received wisdom seems to be that tiles or Karndean etc are more suited. I'm not keen on either as I think tiles would be too hard and cold at times of year when the heating isn't on and I just don't like the fake look of Karndean or similar, especially in a large space. But is engineered wood with UFH a crazy idea?

I have engineered wood with UFH. Decided not to go for tiles or Karndean for the same reasons...however, I have a love hate relationship with my flooring. We decided to go for a lighter coloured wood with a matt oiled finished. It is a bit high maintenance for my liking. It stains quite easily and I seem to be for ever vacuuming. To keep it looking good you need to clean with proper wood cleaner and you are only suppose to use proper cotton mop for cleaning, not microfibre. In hind sight I wish I'd gone for a harder finish and I might look into having it refinished in the future.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think a varnished finish would have been more hard-wearing? Have you had any problems with warping?

Engineered wood is fine with UFH, it is recommended. Real wood isn’t but engineered is fine. I have had EW with wet ufh for 5 years (was previously carpet) and have never had a problem with movement.

Mine has a matte varnish finish as it was the most hardwearing. I love the look of oiled floors but the samples just weren’t as robust. We don’t wear shoes in the house so no issues with heel marks or whatever. There are a couple of dents and whatnot from where we’ve dropped things or where things have been knocked off the side by the cats. Otherwise, it’s aging well.

Mine is in a living room. I wouldn’t have it in a high traffic kitchen diner. It doesn’t cope well with water and would get very marked by dining chairs. It also can’t be properly mopped.

Mine is vacuumed once a week and given a once over with Method wood floor cleaner (the marzipan one) once a month-6 weeks, it doesn’t get dirty.

We have engineered wood with UFH. We've had it for about 8 months now. It's in a room that gets a lot of footfall and people come in directly from outside, but it seems to be coping well with all of that. We don't have any children in the house now which probably helps. Dirty shoes taken off at the threshold. The UFH is a treat underfoot.

No problem with warping. Ours is 'floating' with a couple of mm of underlay between UFH screed and wood. Like spork I would go for a hardier finish.
spork do you know which matt vanish was used for your flooring?

SporkInTheToaster · 12/03/2018 14:39

No idea, I’m afraid, expat.

expatmigrant · 12/03/2018 14:47

Nio probs spork .I have a some spare planks in the garage so will experiment with a matt vanish to see how it looks.

I'm wavering now, ours will be in a high-traffic area. Wood looks so lovely though Sad.

It is a tough decision because neither options are cheap. I still love the wood and ours is in a high traffic area too. My advice would be just to make sure you look at different finishes and chose one that suits your family best. Don't be swayed by the home decor magazines like I was Grin.
And do go for the UFH. It is so lovely underfoot and we have not even needed a fire this winter and ours is a large room with a lot of glass. The cats have been experts at finding all the hotspots.

I have large format ceramic tiles in my kitchen with ufh and they are brilliant. Will
last forever. Wood won’t - and you have to be more careful with it. The tiles are not cold in summer (dog likes them) and are way more stylish than Karndean. I don’t understand the obsession with one brand on so many threads.

I have a Matt varnish finish for the wood we have with ufh elsewhere and you can get a variety of depths for the veneer. So far so good but not high traffic areas.

We don’t have UFH but do have an engineered oak floor in hall/kitchen/dining area/snug. It’s been down for 4 years and still looks new. There are a couple of scratches but they just seem to blend int the grain of the wood and are not really visible. It is hoovered and mopped weekly with one of those spray and go mops with Bona wood floor cleaner. We went for a brushed and uv lacquer finish. Wish we had underfoot heating though!

expatmigrant · 12/03/2018 18:00

pissedoffneighbour could you please link the mop you use?

PissedOffNeighbour · 12/03/2018 20:57

I have engineered wood over ufh throughout my house. The floors are oiled and very low maintenance. The onlu damage has been outside one shower where someone constantly let a damp floormat and so one board is a bit warped. I regularly reoil patches where there have been scratches and it comes up like new. They were expensive at the outside but we have had them 10 years now.
