When ours did it it was a problem with the ball cock in the tank in the loft

inanutshelle · 11/03/2018 19:37

We thought it may be something to do with that. Did it need replacing or adjusting?

Ours needed replaced as it was punctured

You can fix it yourself. You can buy the ball cock in a DIY store for about £10. Instructions can be found online.

If you are lucky and it is due to you being in a 'hard' water area it may be you just need to clear the calcium(?) deposits from where the ball valve 'hinges'. Basically wiggle it up and down a bit to free it up!
If it still won't stop, then a new rubber washer (50 p sort of price) or if unlucky or unadventurous a whole new ball valve assembly, probably around a tenner as suggested.
Find out where to turn the water off BEFORE messing with it!

if there is one of these big brass things

www.screwfix.com/p/pegler-float-valve-part-2/27627

and it drips even when the float is pushed upwards, then you should buy a new one and swap it. The effort is less than taking the old one off and repairing it.

However you can subsequently, if you wish, dismantle, descale and re-washer the old one on the kitchen table at your leisure, and hang it, in a plastic bag, next to the tank so you can swap it back in 20 years.

Note that the one in my link is about the best you can get. There are cheaper ones that are not one-tenth as good and might save you a pound or so. Read the reviews. It must be a "part 2" version with the little plastic bridge on the top.

it can also be caused by internally-leaking mixer taps, invariably the ones with ceramic valves and a single joystick lever; or by mixer showers that have been incorrectly plumbed to tank-fed hot and mains-fed cold.

Very very rarely it is caused by a punctured coil in a hot-water cylinder.

Ball cock has gone. Simple enough to replace, just make sure you turn off the mains before you do it or isolate the tank feed - ours had a stop in the airing cupboard.
