Pitched Roof vs Lantern

Planning a single storey kitchen ext. 9m wide x 4m.

Looking for pros & cons of a standard pitched, well insulated tiled roof vs a glass roof lantern - which would be pretty large.

We plan to have UFH, insulated cavity walls & a set of 6m bifolds. Room will be kitchen/diner/living. Existing tiny kitchen will become a utility & loo.

Particuarly looking for opinions from those who have a roof lantern. Are they cold in the winter? Hot in the summer? I like the look of them & of course they allow so much light - but will I regret it in a few years? Are they basically a conservatory?

I know efficiency wise a standard roof is better - but how much better?

Thanks

One thing that I'd consider is that a roof lantern generally
looks better in the middle of the room while other types of glazing give you more design options for where the light falls.

Like in the attached photo, you get light on the dining area. If there was a roof lantern, the light would be directly over a random bit of floor. As your extension is going to be large, it's good to think about zoning and how the light works inside.

Thanks JoJo. The extension is essentially a rectangle 9mx5m. So the lantern would also be a rectangle in the centre, for example 8x4m. I’m looking to weigh up the pros & cons of each both roof lantern & ‘standard’ roof, thanks

Hi we have a lantern, our extension was 6x2m I wasn’t sure at first but due to drainage/pipes a sloped roof wasn’t possible, I really glad now we went with it, let’s in a enormous amount of light looks really stylish.

Sorry didn’t read your op properly, we have lantern & French doors I haven’t noticed any lack of heat, we have a radiator in the new bit( it’s a side return extension where the roof lantern is) & definitely doesn’t feel like a conservatory.

We have a lantern. It looks great! You have to be mindful of how you arrange your furniture in terms where you put your artificial lighting (you'll probably want light directly over your dining table/worktop space).

We didn't put in under floor heating and I regret that as it's colder than the rest of the house, but not unusable.

Thanks. What are they like in the Summer?

Summer is fine, not like a greenhouse, just light and airy. The cold floor probably helps it not get too hot!

I have an extension as long and slightly wider than yours and we’ve had a lantern roof fitted, it’s fabulous and gives so much light.
My kitchen and island is at one end, a dining table and chairs and 2 sofas at the other end.
The lighting is important and our electrician was really helpful
It is South and West facing so because it’s a new build we had air conditioning put in, we live in the U.K. so it gets used for about 3 weeks every year! It also has UFH which is great in the winter.
I wanted bi fold doors too but our house is listed and in a National Park so that was a big no.
