Banister hand rail

This will be the start of many DIY threads I think, as after years of renting with shitty landlords we are buying a house and possibly due to complete at the end of the month Smile

The house has banisters that are painted on the bottom bit but the handrail is wood. As it's a brand new house it's untreated (and probably cheap wood too).

It's not high up on the priority list to change as we're starting from scratch, but what can I use to protect the wood and make it look a bit nicer for the time being? We have 3 children who aren't quite out of the grubby hands stage just yet. I don't think I want anything too shiny and happy to keep the wood light.

Thank you

Matt clear varnish. A couple of coats.

Thank you. Someone mentioned oil? Or was it wax? I've used varnish before so that may be easiest.

Danish Oil. At least 3 coats, with light sanding (finest sandpaper or wire wool) in between coats, before you properly use the rail. If it gets marked or really dirty you can sand it again and re-oil

We have oil on our bannisters and handrail. It's really easy 2 apply - quick sand down, wipe with a clean cloth, apply a coat, leave for 30 mins then wipe off the excess. Repeat 12 hours later and voilà! I've done ours twice in 4 years, and it looks great....

Personally I went for matt varnish. Oiling is perhaps more in fashion but the difference is barely discernible IMO and varnish gives more of a seal, no maintenance and is easier to paint over if you like later.
