Painting kitchen countertops?

I believe they're vinyl.
Do you just use normal gloss paint after sanding them down?

I’ve never seen a painted worktop and it sounds like a bit of a botch. If it’s just a simple laminate worktop, you could replace it.

JoJoSM2 · 07/03/2018 15:11

Cheaply.

3luckystars · 07/03/2018 15:16

Why are you painting them?

I think its a mistake. Can you replace them?

swivelchair · 07/03/2018 15:44

My tenants did this to my blockwood counter tops after getting them slightly burned. The deposit people had no problem with me retaining deposit to replace them (removing the paint wasn't possible unfortunately)

It's not appropriate - the surface needs to be food safe - what kind of paint would you use that could stand the treatment a work top gets?

They do sell special kits for redoing vinyl countertops. It’s not ordinary paint.

MMRR · 07/03/2018 17:06

Yes sorry that's what I meant, the special kit. I didn't think just standard deluxe paint would work Grin
I'd love to know how to change the counter tops cheap enough without ripping them out of the kitchen.

Do you just get new laminate and cover? Haven't a clue.

You can buy replacement worktops from any diy store or there are companies that do it for you , one is called dreamdoors but there might be others near you, I think they just fit over the existing ones.

If you're on a really tight budget you could try fablon on a roll, they sell it in wilko.

Blueistheneworange · 07/03/2018 17:16

I painted my kitchen worktops last year and they look grand. Friends were amazed at how good they looked. It was a lot of work but worth it.
There are special kits you can buy from amazon,I think the one I used was called Giani.
When it came to the final coats of varnish I added some bronze glitter to it and the worktops have a lovely shimmer. It doesn't trump buying a new worktop but we are planning on replacing our kitchen in a few years and so I just wanted to brighten it up. I also painted the cupboard

Thanks everyone, very useful!

A favourite in the crappy military housing kitchens is vinyl/fablon. It can look very good if you take your time

I know of two women who redid their counters with the kits, both were very pleased with the cost and final results.
