Grey grey grey! Sorry!

I know this has been done to death but what are the shades of grey which are really light but still noticeably grey!
We have found polished pebble but don’t want to use the same colour in 2 different rooms.
Cannot be an own brand eg homebase or b&q as the decorator refuses to use non named paint!

I've heard f and b cornforth white or ammonite are worth considering, also dulux dusted moss in the lightest tone (It's either shade 1 or shade 5 iyswim, can't remember!)

Great. Will look those up. Think f&b is out of our price range tho as it’s 1 big open plan room which is the equivalent of 3 rooms!

I did think that. Could I not just get a f&b paint matched? I really like the Valspar paint matching so could I not do that?!

We’ve just used dulux trade grey steel. There’s 4 shades with no 4 being the lightest. No 4 very light and I wish I’d used 3 which has more depth and warmth.

Laska5772 · 06/03/2018 19:17

I know its not quite the done thing to say so on MN but we have just painted our lounge in B&Q's Valspar range 'Grey Hints' and absolutely love it .. (£12 a pot too!) Smile

namechange5000 · 06/03/2018 19:29

That’s a good point re doing the big room in the polished pebble and the small room in the f&b. Will go and grab an f&b tester tomorrow in fact.
I think I need 2 different greys otherwise 50% of my house is going to be the same colour!

The decorator refuses to use non named paint ?? Shock Why, so they can charge you more perhaps ? Get a new decorator..

namechange5000 · 06/03/2018 19:32

Is f&b ok for rooms like kitchens and bathrooms or not?
I know the polished pebble has a tough finish range which we were planning on using.

We have a decorator starting work for us in a few weeks. He recommended that if we wanted a F&B colour to have to made up by Johnstones - much cheaper, great colour match and better coverage apparently?
(NB: We are currently deciding between Polished Pebble and F&B Ammonite).

namechange5000 · 06/03/2018 19:34

We buy the paint so the decorator doesn’t make any money re that. He just says the prices he’s quoted are for using Dulux or named brands, as with cheaper paints that need more coats he ends up spending more time on the room which means he’s working for free. I think he’s got stung before doing 4 coats of a cheap paint taking twice as long.

Laska5772 · 06/03/2018 19:36

Ours took just two coats using Valspar .. we were painting over a cream/yellowish paint ...

Laska5772 · 06/03/2018 19:37

.. and DH is a real stickler for painting well.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 06/03/2018 19:42

Get Johnstones paint colour mated to f&b colours - much better paint & cheaper. The colours are identical.

Angryosaurus · 06/03/2018 19:44

just walnut. Duluux

jensner · 06/03/2018 19:54

Not cheap but Little Greene French Grey is lovely. We've just painted our bedroom in that. Other rooms are Dulux Just Walnut, which has a slight lilac hint of it in certain lights.

Bluesheep8 · 07/03/2018 06:02

I second what pps have said about colour matching. Our whole house apart from the main bathroom which is polished pebble is done in f and b copies

Getabloominmoveon · 07/03/2018 06:30

Albany paint - Steyning is a lovely soft warm grey

MammaAgata · 07/03/2018 06:36

Agree to all regards Johnstones paint matching. I have F&B ammonite in my bathroom, but Johnstones matched by Brewers. I had the whole house decorated 2 years ago with all F&B colours but in a really hard wearing paint bought at Brewers.

Xanadu46 · 07/03/2018 06:48

Pebble shore is very light

sausagedogsmakechipolatas · 07/03/2018 10:07

We have F&B Ammonite in our living room - actually it’s a Valspar dupe because the F&B paint was appallingly rubbish (think three coats on top of white and still not an even finish.) It’s light but definitely a nice neutral grey.

Luckingfovely · 07/03/2018 10:12

Yes Johnstones is much better and longer lasting but can be colour matched exactly to F&B - our whole house is done in this - highly recommend.

namechange5000 · 07/03/2018 18:21

Got the Cornforth White today.
I’m worried it’s too dark.
It’s costing me a bloody fortune in tester pots!
I like the finish of the f&b so hoping the white furniture will be enough to lighten to paint.

I got Valspar modern grey mixed at b&q - it's a true grey - not lilac or blue
