What's the property market like near you?

We've only been on the market a few days and we've got a couple of interested parties but the potential numbers they are bouncing around seem v.low. We are in the home counties, good commute to London, outstanding school a five minute walk away.

I think the market is definitely overdue a correction - especially in London/South East - and anticipate we can get our next house at a reduced price but wondered what sort of reductions people were seeing at the moment? And where are you based?

Northwest (Cheshire) - loads of new building developments near us seem to have sent house prices rocketing. Houses selling really very quickly.

missyB1 · 05/03/2018 20:55

Gloucestershire, prices going up and houses in popular areas selling quickly.

Bekabeech · 05/03/2018 21:08

I've seen houses at the £1M area and higher be on the market for 1- 2 years, and I know one at about £2.3M which has been on the market for 3+ years (we'd love it if we could afford it). I've also seen one which was £1M come back on the market at under £900K, I think that is about the right price for it. There are some real bargains around, if you have the money on top of the purchase price to do the work.

CannaeBeErsed · 05/03/2018 22:02

@womanformallyknownaswoman I'm in a village in SW Scotland. It's a lovely place. Just over 30 mins from Glasgow apparently, not that I ever go there.

JoJoSM2 · 05/03/2018 23:00

MakeLemonade, yes I'm in SM2.

How big is the property you're selling?

Beka, whereabouts are you?

Bekabeech · 05/03/2018 23:14

Surrey proper.

PurpleNailVarnish · 05/03/2018 23:36

Like LadyGrey and missy I'm in the SW and it's still boom time here.

We're thinking of moving so I'm keeping a keen eye on the market, houses are selling before they're on Rightmove.

Things are slower at the higher end, anything over £1 million is taking a while.

It's particularly crazy when you realise that transport links aren't great round here. We aren't that far from a city but if you want to commute there you have to drive.

JoJoSM2 · 05/03/2018 23:58

It's slower in the 1M+ market around me too but I don't think it was much faster back in the day of bidding wars when average-sized homes were getting 10+ offers. The houses (or McMansions) that have been sitting on the market for ages are 2.5M+ but then it's not a first choice area for those budgets so they'll always be tricky to shift.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 06/03/2018 02:52

@CannaeBeErsed thx. Interesting - been toying with moving to Scotland (father was Scots tho I have never lived there) cos they seem to be getting their act together re citizen care, plus I spent some time on Iona a couple of years ago and loved the West coast - clear blue seas, wildlife, quiet - it was pretty idyllic. What's the transport and healthcare like near you - I want to be nearish to small University town (not big city) for the intellectual stimulation and diversity but live in quiet place. What do you value where you are?

sausagedogsmakechipolatas · 06/03/2018 07:42

Gloucestershire, houses moving slowly due to the amount of new builds. We’re having two more estate agents value today who previously valued ours just before Xmas so will see how that compares.

CountFosco · 06/03/2018 08:01

In naice area of the NE. The market hasn't recovered since 2007. We're selling our 3 bed detached for just £30K more than we paid for it in 2003 and it took a year and a big price drop to even get people through the door. The 4 bed houses we are looking at have all been on the market for months and months.

nightshade · 06/03/2018 08:01

Rural Northern ireland...market is slow over past few years. About 6 mths to 18 mths for a sale...average 4 bed detached new build home about 180 to 200k...

3 bed new build semi about 120k.

Minus4 · 06/03/2018 08:08

Still overpriced and moving quickly here. Popular South Wales town. Large 3 bed semi family homes £400k+, in catchment for good schools, go straight away. Flats and anything unusual or quirky are sticking.

MoleGrey · 06/03/2018 20:24

Am in SE London and am currently looking at properties for sale. One thing I've noticed is that there isn't really much, if any, price difference between properties in good decorative order and those that need updating/redecorating including bathrooms / kitchens. Has anyone else noticed this? The ones in good order seem to sell quickly but the others are just sitting.

CannaeBeErsed · 06/03/2018 20:47

@womanformallyknownaswoman it's a very small and welcoming community round here. You can walk through the village and everyone will greet you whether they know you or not.
It's a very slow pace of life here and not very affluent but people are happy staying around here where they grew up. You get a lot for your money. For a small village we have an art gallery and a museum so not bad.

If I won the lottery I would build a house here and still not leave.

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/03/2018 20:53

North London area. Local development £950-2.8million sold within days.
Second phase has only a few left. The show home hasn't even been built

Loads of sold boards but not much for sale
