Upstairs floorboards

Our upstairs landing has been squeaky for some time over a couple of floorboards. DH has wanted to avoid pulling the carpet up to fully check for fear of it not going down properly again. We’ve left it as it didn’t feel too bad to walk along, just a bit noisy.

Today I noticed that a floorboard felt as though it had completely gone, so we’ve pulled the carpet up to have a look. One of the floor boards is completely knackered and the others around it aren’t much better. The board we unscrewed is quite small - we don’t seem to have uniform sizes boards (I don’t know if that’s meant to be a thing). Obviously I need to get someone out to have a look but was hoping for some advice in the meantime.

On the attached picture the ‘newer’ looking wood to the left of the picture is underneath an existing floorboard. I’m not quite sure whether this is part of any of the joists or what it is doing there. There doesn’t seem to be anything underneath supporting it and it’s completely split. There’s a similar piece of wood on another side of the gap and again it doesn’t seem like there’s anything supporting under that bit.

We’ve rescrewed the board back in place best we can (it’s still knackered) and I’ll be calling round people tomorrow to come and have a look, but just wondered whether anyone has had this issue before? Will we need to look at replacing a lot of boards upstairs and what roughly is the cost of this?

I’m concerned as in some of the bedrooms there are squeaky floorboards, which have got slightly squeakier over time and I’m worried this may turn out to be an expensive job. We don’t know any good joiners in the area.

I’ll try pull back the carpet again and post a pic of the floorboards as they currently are.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The floor board we took up is the one to the right just underneath the underlay. The floorboard that has a big crack along it is just before the stairs and I didn’t see that before posting as we didn’t pull the carpet up that much. The floorboards look utterly buggered Sad

That timber providing support will have to go. It does look as though it's a previous patch job using materials that were to hand. A decent mend can be done yourself as long as you work from the joists and are very careful (my grandad, dad and husband have all ended up with a leg through a ceiling a weird family tradition!).
Ours need doing. This time we will pay for it as dc etc.

Thank you.

On the picture in the first post the wood underneath the pipes at the top of the pic looks splintered. Have worked out that it’s part of the same (I assume) joist and that they must have cut out a gap for the pipes to run through when the central heating was put in.

Although we are skint I think I’d prefer to pay for someone to come and do it, as DH is not confident to have a go at us fixing it and I wouldn’t know where to start. We are planning on either renting out or selling the house in a few months time, so want it done properly.

Do you think we will just need longer floor boards? I’m assuming the smaller floorboards will all have that ‘supporting’ piece of wood underneath.
